Wolf Man: Director Leigh Whannell Wants to ‘Scare the S—‘ Out of Audiences

As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast with a soft spot for horror films, I eagerly await the release of Leigh Whannell‘s “Wolf Man.” Having been through my fair share of cinematic journeys, I can appreciate the efforts put into creating a unique, immersive experience that transcends the boundaries of our living rooms.

Wolf Man director Leigh Whannell hopes his new movie has a lasting impression on audiences.

After the disappointing box office performance of Universal Pictures’ 2017 film The Mummy in the shared cinematic universe of Universal Monsters called Dark Universe, the studio has pivoted its strategy towards individual projects like Renfield, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and Abigail. One of their notable achievements since then has been The Invisible Man, released in 2020, which was both financially and critically successful.

The movie earned an impressive $144.5 million while having a production cost of just $7 million, possibly contributing to Blumhouse’s decision to hire Whannell again for another Universal Monsters film – this time adapting the legend of the Wolf Man.

At the New York Comic Con 2024, Whannell was present at BlumFest for the promotion of his upcoming film. When asked by ComingSoon about what viewers should anticipate, he shared some insights.

How will Wolf Man impact audiences?

Whannell expresses his desire by saying, “I’m hoping they’ll really enjoy it, feel fear, and experience strong emotions. In other words, I aim for it to be a moving, emotional piece. Additionally, I want it to be frightening enough to make them jump out of their seats. That’s why I hope they’ll catch it in theaters.

Whannell discussed the significance of crafting a distinctly cinematic experience solely for movie theaters. “How can we entice people to theaters?” he ponders. “I mean, how do you transform something into an extraordinary phenomenon? It’s challenging. It’s hard to create movies like Top Gun or Barbie that truly draw cinema-goers. The task is becoming increasingly difficult. So I truly hope that The Wolf Man captures that essence.

Blake, a devoted family man, moves with his hardworking spouse Charlotte and their child Ginger from San Francisco to Oregon, following the inheritance of his old family home after his father’s enigmatic vanishing and presumed demise. In this rural dwelling, the family encounters a terrifying werewolf, causing it to scratch Blake’s arm. They seek refuge within their home, but later, Blake starts exhibiting unusual transformations, potentially endangering Charlotte and Ginger.

Wolf Man arrives in theaters on January 17, 2025.
