As a seasoned gamer and long-time gymnastics enthusiast who has witnessed the highs and lows of Olympic competitions, I must confess that I find myself deeply invested in the Hezly Rivera controversy at the 2024 Paris Olympics. As a fellow athlete, my heart goes out to her, for I know all too well the bittersweet taste of triumph and disappointment that comes with competing on such a grand stage.
Several gymnastics enthusiasts are left puzzled by the unexpected absence of Hezly Rivera from the Team USA women’s team final and apparatus finals at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The talented 16-year-old gymnast made her Olympic debut during the qualification rounds, impressing audiences with her performances on beam and uneven bars. However, her absence in the subsequent competitions has sparked controversy among fans due to her exclusion from the team final lineup. This article aims to shed light on the Hezly Rivera controversy unfolding at the 2024 Olympic Games.
Is Hezly Rivera still competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics?
It’s expected that Hezly Rivera won’t participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics for the rest of the games, as indicated by the team selection for the US women’s team final, which took place on July 30.
During the qualification rounds, I had some wobbles on the balance beam but nailed my routine on the uneven bars. However, my scores on those events were the lowest among our team members, causing them to be dropped. This meant that Team USA made an announcement on July 29th that I wouldn’t be competing in any apparatus at the team final, unless Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, or Jade Carey decided to make a switch. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it to any apparatus finals or the all-around competition either, so it seems that my Olympic journey will come to an end.
Tomorrow, I’m all set to make a beeline for the medal podium as part of Team USA Women’s Gymnastics! Here’s our lineup:

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel disappointed and surprised by the decision to leave Hezly out of the women’s team final in gymnastics. With Team USA having such a significant lead (around 6 points) from the qualification rounds, it seems only fair that she could have competed on bars without negatively impacting our chances. And let’s face it, having her there would have looked better and been more inclusive. Unfortunately, this situation has already sparked controversy, with some critics suggesting Hezly doesn’t deserve a team medal due to her absence.
Considering Hezly’s impressive scores relative to her fellow Team USA members, it wasn’t surprising that she was chosen for the team final. Given the aim is to assemble a team with the greatest scoring potential, it seems logical to include her.
Additionally, Team USA has experienced this predicament before at the Olympics. In 2008, Samantha Pezcek was injured during qualifications and couldn’t compete in the team final, yet she still received a silver medal as a team member. Similarly, in 2004, Courtney McCool performed in qualifications but didn’t make it to the finals, earning a silver medal along with her teammates.
