We Were Liars Is Not Scary – ‘Horror’ Misconception Explained

Since its debut on Amazon Prime Video this week, We Were Liars has stirred up quite a response. The series is already gaining attention for its complex plotline and chilling undertones. However, the “chilling” aspect doesn’t adhere to the typical horror genre. Instead, it delves into psychological thriller territory, which can sometimes be challenging to watch due to its intense nature.

Is We Were Liars a scary horror series?

The story “We Were Liars” is adapted from a novel by E. Lockhart with the same title. It predominantly delves into the repercussions of personal errors, while concurrently examining hidden family matters, past traumas, and affluent social circles.

As a devoted viewer, I must say that this series, although labeled as psychological horror, deviates significantly from the conventional horror shows that rely heavily on frightening moments. Instead, it delivers an intense, suspenseful atmosphere that might tug at your emotional strings without resorting to explicit elements such as graphic violence, grotesque imagery, or sudden jump scares.

Instead, “We Were Liars” is an unnerving viewing experience. It features numerous tense scenes and delves into its theme with a grim tone, which could potentially be upsetting for certain audiences. A significant portion of the series revolves around the psychological repercussions of a traumatic incident that the main character endures.

The enigma surrounding Cadence significantly heightens the suspense. Although it may not be traditionally frightening, this mystery might seem unsettling or intense for some viewers.

Is We Were Liars safe for children to watch?

While this show isn’t classified as a traditional horror due to lack of graphic gore or sudden shocks, it does contain adult themes that might be inappropriate for younger viewers. These themes include drug use, harsh language, and scenes depicting brutal deaths. The content is better suited for older teenagers and young adults.

Just as the book was written with an older reader in mind, so too should the series be considered unsuitable for younger viewers. It’s best that young children steer clear of this show.

All eight episodes of We Were Liars are now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
