The Princess and the Frog Television Show Canceled at Disney+

Instead of progressing with a Disney+ series centered around the Tiana character from “The Princess and the Frog,” Walt Disney Animation Studios has chosen not to continue in that direction.

In December of 2020, it became known that Disney was planning a live-action TV series, extending from the 2009 animated film “The Princess and the Frog.” Anika Noni Rose was slated to return to her voice role in this production, with the storyline following the character as she delves deeper into the city of New Orleans.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has pulled the plug on the series, as it has now been canceled.

Why did Disney cancel its The Princess and the Frog series?

It appears that Disney hasn’t explicitly stated their reasons for discontinuing the Tiana series, but according to an article from The Hollywood Reporter, it seems that the studio has decided to stop producing long-format original content for streaming services.

According to individuals with knowledge of the streaming series, despite numerous attempts and alterations to the creative team, Tiana unfortunately did not reach the required level due to high production expenses.

Furthermore, it’s worth noting that Disney+ will no longer be releasing a previously planned, full-length animated movie, for which the title has yet to be disclosed. As of now, specific information about the nature of this project is kept confidential.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m super excited to share some fantastic news! It looks like Walt Disney Animation Studios is cooking up something fresh – a short-form special inspired by “The Princess and the Frog”! Although the specifics of the plot are still being kept under wraps, we do know that Joyce Sherri will be directing and Steve Anderson writing this magical tale. Can’t wait to see what they come up with!

Under the guidance of directors John Musker and Ron Clements, the animated film The Princess and the Frog grossed around $271 million worldwide. Alongside star Rose, the movie’s talented voice cast includes Bruno Campos as Prince Naveen, Keith David as Dr. Facilier, Michael-Leon Wooley as Louis, Jim Cummings as Ray, Oprah Winfrey as Eudora, Terrence Howard as James, John Goodman as Eli ‘Big Daddy’ La Bouff, and many others.

The Princess and the Frog is currently available to stream on Disney+.
