‘The Piña Colada Song’ Is Being Turned into a Movie, First Details Revealed

It’s been announced unexpectedly that Alloy Entertainment and renowned musician Rupert Holmes have joined forces to transform the 1979 chart-topper “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” into a feature film.

What will The Piña Colada Song movie be about?

As reported by Deadline, details about the storyline of the upcoming film are being tightly guarded at present, but it’s classified as a romantic comedy. The project is seeking writers at this stage and will be produced by Leslie Morgenstein, President and Chief Creative Officer at Alloy, along with Elysa Koplovitz Dutton, EVP of Film at Alloy. Additionally, Holmes has been confirmed to take on an executive producer role for the movie.

The hit song ‘Escape (The Piña Colada Song)’ was first introduced on Holmes’ 1979 studio album titled Partners in Crime. In no time, it gained massive popularity and became the last chart-topping single of the 1970s in the United States. The tune, best known for its catchy chorus, narrates a story about a man feeling restless in his relationship, who, while reading the newspaper, notices an ad placed by a woman looking for a companion.

For over four decades since it first came out, this song has maintained its popularity, featuring in numerous movies, TV programs, and other media.

Starting off his musical journey back in the 1960s, Holmes has since unveiled nine studio albums in his career. This versatile British-American artist is not just recognized for his music but also for his stage works such as ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood’, a production that bagged two Tony Awards, and ‘Curtains’. Apart from this, Holmes created the comedy-drama television series ‘Remember WENN’ for AMC in 1966. Furthermore, he penned the novel ‘Murder Your Employer: The McMasters Guide to Homicide’, published in 2023.
