Stranger Things Season 5 Filming Teases a Dead Character’s Return

As a dedicated fan of Stranger Things since its inception, I must say the anticipation for Season 5 has been palpable. The potential return of Dr. Martin Brenner, or Papa, as portrayed by the brilliant Matthew Modine, is an exciting development that has me on the edge of my seat!

It has been confirmed that Stranger Things, the widely loved show, will be wrapping up with Season 5, which is now in production. There’s a lot of buzz surrounding this upcoming final installment of the Netflix series known for its sci-fi, horror, and mystery elements. One of the main topics generating excitement is the possibility of a certain character, previously thought to be deceased, making a comeback.

Matthew Modine’s Papa likely to return in Stranger Things Season 5

In the storyline of Stranger Things, Dr. Martin Brenner/Papa, portrayed by Matthew Modine, plays a significant role, particularly due to his relationship with Millie Bobby Brown’s character Eleven / Jane Hopper (“El”). As we move into Season 4, Eleven interacts with him one last time before departing, and he meets an unfortunate end in the Nevada desert. With production for the final season underway, Modine has hinted at his potential return based on recent posts on his Instagram account.

The actor recently posted an old video from several years back, and wrote in the caption, “strangerthings5 #bts #drmartinbrenner #papa #indestructible,” hinting at a potential return of the character.

There’s no official word yet from either the actor or Netflix about the subject. However, a recent post has sparked fan theories about its implications. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that Modine has hinted at his character potentially reappearing in the series plot.

In a 2022 conversation with Vulture, the actor who played Full Metal Jacket’s character was asked if he considered his character deceased. “No, I wouldn’t,” he replied, expressing that he didn’t want his character to be dead. Three questions intrigue him: How did his character survive the Demogorgon and One? Why could Eleven not use her powers against Dr. Brenner after blowing three guards in the air, when he simply shrugged off her attempts and said, “You didn’t think it was going to be that easy, did you?” Was there something more to Dr. Brenner than what we see on the surface?

Modine hinted at his desire to delve into themes like redemption and forgiveness for the character. In a 2022 podcast interview on Happy Sad Confused, The Duffer Brothers announced Brenner’s demise. Later in the same year, Matt Duffer mentioned to Deadline that they plan to focus on the early phases of Brenner’s experiments, which suggests there could be flashback scenes featuring the character.
