As a long-time fan of Ridley Scott‘s work, it feels like Christmas came early this year! The mastermind behind some of my all-time favorite movies is not only developing another Alien film but also has his eyes set on collaborating with Tony Gilroy for an upcoming project.
Ridley Scott is developing a new Alien movie.
Scott initiated the Alien series back in 1979, with the film Alien featuring Sigourney Weaver. This was succeeded by James Cameron’s Aliens in 1986, and several other sequels like Alien 3 from 1992 and Alien Resurrection in 1997 were also produced.
In 2012, Scott resumed his work with the franchise as he directed Prometheus, and in 2017, Alien: Covenant followed suit. More recently, he produced Alien: Romulus (2024), which was helmed by Fede Álvarez.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scott is currently working on a new film in the Alien series for 20th Century Studios. At this point, it’s unclear if this will be Alien: Romulus 2, as Scott’s future role within the franchise has not yet been defined, or an entirely separate project.
20th Century Studios’ Steve Asbell has shared with The Hollywood Reporter that they are actively developing concepts for a potential sequel to Alien: Romulus.
“We haven’t quite closed our deal with Fede, but we are going to, and he has an idea that we’re working on,” he said. “The two survivors, Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, were real highlights of the film. And so I always think of it like, ‘Wow, where do people want to see them go next?’ We know there’s going to be aliens. We know there’s going to be great horror set pieces. But I fell in love with both of them and I want to see what their story is.”
Ridley Scott wants to work with Andor’s Tony Gilroy
Scott’s upcoming venture, slated to start shooting in early next year, involves creating a biographical movie focused on the legendary disco band the Bee Gees, under the banner of Paramount Pictures.
Due to his packed timetable, Scott’s production company, Scott Free Productions, is seeking top-tier talent to direct several upcoming projects. Notably, Tony Gilroy from Andor is one individual on their wishlist of potential collaborators.
Scott stated his plans for the following three years are already set and prepared,” he said. “Now, it’s time to find accomplished directors capable of managing such large budgets. Even though you might have the finest steed in the race, without a skilled rider, the horse won’t win.
