As a huge fan of Patrick J. Adams‘ work, it was absolutely thrilling to hear him discuss his latest project, Young Werther. His passion for acting and his dedication to his craft were evident throughout the interview, as he spoke about the challenges and joys of working on this film.
In a recent interview, ComingSoon chatted with Patrick J. Adams, star of Young Werther. Adams, who acts alongside Douglas Booth and Alison Pill in this new romance film by José Lourenço, shared insights about the movie’s significance, collaborating with Lourenço, potential Suits LA comeback, and other topics. The movie is now available in selected cinemas and on digital platforms from Lionsgate.
In this romantic comedy adaptation of a beloved novel about tragic love, Patrick J. Adams, Douglas Booth, and Alison Pill take on leading roles. The story follows a young, free-spirited, and charismatic writer named Werther who accidentally encounters the woman he falls for in Toronto – but discovers she’s already betrothed. Ignoring warnings from his anxious best friend, Werther embarks on an impassioned, ill-advised, and humorous pursuit to capture her heart.
Tyler Treese: Hey Patrick, great job on Young Werther! It was a blast to watch. The show seems to have a self-referential vibe, referencing the original book in creative ways. I’ve been wondering about your personal connection with The Sorrows of Young Werther, that timeless novel. I must admit, I haven’t read it myself yet, but since watching this, I’ve become quite curious and delved deeper into it. However, I’m curious if you ever did read the book or watched any adaptations?
Patrick J. Adams shares that he makes it a point to revisit “The Sorrows of Young Werther” annually, keeping it by his bedside. However, before encountering this script and beginning to read it, he had never come across this book. Intrigued, he conducted some research on the book and conversed with director José Lourenço, who provided additional insights as to why the story was considered both significant and somewhat contentious during its time. Therefore, this is his initial exposure to the tale.
It’s been intriguing to create a movie around a subject I wasn’t familiar with before, and delving deeper into the source material has only made it more captivating. José seems to have a unique take on the book, as he discovered an obscure title from 1774 and adapting it for today’s audience has been both amusing and inspiring. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed exploring its history further.
Absolutely, isn’t it fascinating that a book written centuries ago can remain relevant today? It seems that although many things have evolved, the essence of human feelings and connections appears to have remained constant.
As a gamer, let me share my perspective on a classic tale: This story was remarkably profound, especially considering its original ending where the protagonist chose to end his life. A hot topic during the tail-end of the Enlightenment, it delved into the intense battle between passion and reason, exploring human emotions such as love and longing to an overwhelming degree that eventually led to the character’s tragic choice. The controversy surrounding this book was immense, with many young men reportedly finding solace in its narrative. It was indeed a thought-provoking piece for its time.
I’m thrilled that José has adapted that concept and introduced it into our modern context. Indeed, its relevance remains strong, yet by tweaking it slightly and reducing the level of tragedy, while making it more endearing and accessible, he seems to have achieved something remarkable. Labeling it as a romantic comedy might be an oversimplification, but the transformation into a more appealing and less grim finale is truly ingenious.
Given the significant passage of time since the original novel, modifying the source material should not stir up strong reactions from Young Werther enthusiasts, wouldn’t you agree?
Your character is intriguing due to his intense focus on his career, which creates tension in his relationship with his fiancé, someone he clearly values deeply. Just like you, who chose to depart from Suits to prioritize family time, have you found yourself identifying with this character because of the predicament where work and personal life seem to be at odds?
Absolutely, there’s a strong resonance between my perspective and Albert’s dedication to his work. He seems to view his commitment as a measure of responsibility, constantly immersed in his tasks. This is how he perceives himself in the world – always working. What particularly moved me about Albert was that this intense focus on work didn’t diminish his affection for Charlotte. While in many other films, such characters appear cold and distant due to their work obsession, Albert manages to maintain a love for her.
From observing Jose with Albert, it appears that Albert shares a similar characteristic in the original novel – he is both professional and respectable yet not cold-hearted and distant from his family. Unlike Werther who dedicates all his time to romantic pursuits, Albert seems to balance his work responsibilities with family ties effectively.
I can really identify with that situation. Sometimes I put in excessive effort at work, finding myself preoccupied and consumed by it. Yet, I strive to maintain a healthy balance between my professional life and responsibilities as a father and partner. It’s a delicate act, and just like the character Albert, I believe many of us grapple with this same dilemma. Through this film, perhaps we both realize that we may have pushed things too far, and it’s essential to reaffirm our commitment to our loved ones. This lifelong struggle to find harmony in life is something I think a lot of people face.
In this movie, Alison Pill delivers an outstanding performance. Her character portrays your future spouse, and she’s as powerful as a natural element. It must have been challenging to depict such a relationship, one built on love despite feelings of dissatisfaction stemming from work obligations. How did they manage to strike the right balance between love and work-related frustration?
Working alongside a talent like Alison was an absolute dream come true for me as a gamer. She’s not just brilliant; she’s generous, present, and always ready to take on new challenges. Her deep understanding of the materials is evident in every scene, making it a privilege to be part of the project. I’ve longed to collaborate with Alison, and this opportunity was a significant reason for my excitement about the venture. Frankly, it left me yearning for more. Being a fiancé who wasn’t able to fully engage due to distance was challenging. As Patrick, the actor, I found myself wanting nothing more than to spend more time with Alison Pill and share more scenes together. So, working alongside her was nothing short of fantastic, and I truly hope we get to do it again in the future.
Are you looking forward to collaborating with Taylor Sheridan on The Madison? It’s quite thrilling, given that he’s built his own creative empire and currently working on numerous shows.
This job has been absolutely extraordinary. It’s hard to put into words, but let me tell you, it’s easily one of the largest, most thrilling, and most rewarding jobs I’ve ever undertaken. Witnessing not just Taylor, but his entire sphere, along with the individuals who have collaborated with him, is a sight to behold. Truly, watching that operation in motion is nothing short of impressive. I can’t wait to share more about it once it’s released, but so far, it’s been an exceptional journey. The team I’m working with is simply outstanding. Every day, I go to work, still in awe that I get to be part of such a remarkable group.
Have you made a brief movie titled “We Are Here” some time ago? Is there anything else you’re aiming to achieve in your career as a writer or director in the future?
Absolutely!
previously, “Suits” had achieved great success, and eventually, it became the most-watched series globally. The spin-off titled “Suits: Los Angeles” is set to premiere. Are you open to making an appearance if it aligns with your schedule and role?
Absolutely, if the circumstances align, I’ve maintained connections with those individuals. Aaron Korsh is clearly leading the charge, and he’s been quite supportive with our podcast about suits. Many other directors who are friends of mine will be directing Suits LA. For us, it’s important that the fit is right, the story is compelling, and everything makes sense. We’re not rushing into anything. Gabriel Macht is returning to the original show, which should be fantastic. As for Harvey in a suit again, fans would undoubtedly love it, but for now, it’s a possibility for the future. I’m open to the idea, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Thanks to Patrick J. Adams for taking the time to talk about Young Werther.
