As a dedicated fan of Outer Banks, I can confidently say that the series has taken us on quite a rollercoaster ride over four seasons, filled with moments that made us laugh, cry, and gasp. But nothing could have prepared me for the heart-wrenching twist in the season 4 finale – the gut-punch of losing one of our beloved Pogues, JJ.
Throughout its four captivating seasons, Outer Banks has led viewers on an exhilarating rollercoaster ride full of thrilling highs and heart-wrenching lows. Along the way, we’ve witnessed breathtaking triumphs like when the Pogues unearthed the fabled lost city of El Dorado and managed to restore Poguelandia. Yet, the Pogues have faced more than their share of painful setbacks – a list that might be too extensive to enumerate, as they’ve had their fair share of hardships.
There were instances that caused laughter, instances that left us speechless, and moments that brought tears of both sorrow and joy. Yet, no scenario I can imagine could have fully prepared us for the heart-wrenching scene the writers presented to us at the end of season 4 of the show.
Warning: Spoilers ahead from Outer Banks season 4, episode 10.
As we move forward into the second half of the season, we’ve been preparing for the last five episodes of season 4 with a sense of sadness. This is due to the fact that only days before Part 2 premiered on Nov. 7, Netflix announced its plan to renew the series for a fifth and concluding season.
With a mix of melancholy and anticipation, we’re moving on from Season Four and diving into Season Five, where we aim to bring our cherished Pogues back home as we originally envisioned and planned for years. This upcoming Season Five will mark our final chapter, and we believe it will be our most outstanding yet,” the co-creators and executive producers Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke shared in a joint statement, first reported by Deadline, announcing their decision to conclude the series.
Anticipating that Outer Banks was about to conclude its run with its final season, delving into the second part of season 4 brought a mix of joy and sadness, as it signaled the start of the Pogues’ swan song on Netflix. We approached the episodes with the expectation that the writers would utilize the remainder of the season to construct the groundwork for the series’ ultimate finale.
Initially, we anticipated that the second half of the season might lead the Pogues to nearly discover the Blue Crown, with a surprising climax paving the way for their final journey. However, what took us by surprise was how the Season 4 finale not only wrenched our hearts out but also trampled on them ruthlessly due to a twist so devastatingly sad, we’re still trying to come to terms with it.
Outer Banks season 4 finale kills off a Pogue and we’re not okay
In the final episode of season 4, The Pogues (alongside Rafe) embark on a quest to locate the Blue Crown. A significant portion of this episode shows them following clues to the crown’s location and engaging in combat with Dalia and her hired guns as they all strive to secure the treasure.
Throughout the finale, there are moments that leave audiences on the edge of their seats with several near-death moments for the Pogues what with Cleo being shot and John B nearly being strangled to death, and yet who’d have guessed the biggest threat to the Pogues would end up being Chandler Groff.
At the beginning of this installment, it appears that Groff’s journey concludes with him receiving retribution for his past wrongdoings – a long line of transgressions such as murdering his wife and deserting JJ. Following his betrayal in the last episode, Groff now finds himself no longer trusted by Dalia, who views him not as an ally but as a tool to achieve her objectives.
Essentially, Lightner is granted permission to eliminate Groff after obtaining the scroll, but Rafe intervenes, saving the situation. Later, Groff attempts to deceive Rafe, a move that backfires significantly as Rafe counteracts him, shoves him into a well, and leaves him stranded in the desert. It seems all is lost for Groff until the Pogues discover the well, at which point he pleads with JJ to aid him.
Instead of being fooled by Groff’s hollow vows as before, JJ now discerns the emptiness and chooses to abandon his father to survive on his own. And true to form, Groff slithers away like a cockroach, escaping from the trap and heading towards Agapenta, where he forcefully kidnaps Kiara at knife-point.
Subsequently, he employed Kiara as a bargaining chip to persuade JJ to yield the Blue Crown, a prize he’d recently obtained. In JJ’s eyes, Kiara was priceless compared to any treasure, so he surrendered the crown, and in return, Groff freed her.
It seemed like winning the crown would satisfy Groff, but it didn’t. Instead, he turned on JJ, stabbing him in the stomach. He accused his son of not helping him escape from the well, seeking revenge. The wound proved fatal, and JJ died in Kiara’s arms shortly after, a heart-wrenching scene that left fans in tears, feeling sadness and anger.
Regardless of his imperfections, what truly mattered to JJ was a family that cherished him, which he discovered with the Pogues. However, it’s worth noting that his greatest find was Kiara, and the heart-wrenching way their story ended – with JJ dying at the hands of his biological father, in Kiara’s arms after confessing his love for her one last time – was undeniably the saddest possible conclusion to JJ’s character development on the show.
Unexpectedly, the moment arrived when we least expected it: the Pogues, who have defied death numerous times before, were written out of the series with a key character’s demise, an event that none of us foresaw prior to the final season. However, this drastic move seems to be a deliberate part of the grand scheme for the concluding episode(s) of the show.
In Season 5, the Pogues embark on a quest for vengeance as they mourn the loss of their comrade JJ. It remains uncertain just how far they’ll push themselves to mete out justice against Groff. We eagerly anticipate seeing the Pogues exact revenge and bring Groff to account, yet are saddened that the last season will unfold without JJ, who has always been the soul of their fellowship. Despite his imperfections, JJ was an unwavering ally and tirelessly guarded his makeshift family.
In a while, we’ll witness the Pogues reciprocating their loyalty by pursuing Groff and delivering justice for JJ. The specifics of how this justice unfolds are yet to be revealed, but we trust that the writers will create an extraordinary finale to this story – unfortunately, it seems our beloved Pogue who brings chaos with a touch of charm won’t be there for this final act.
