New 'Carry-On' thriller might confuse some audiences

As a seasoned gamer with a vast array of experiences under my belt, I must say that the latest Netflix thriller, “Carry-On,” is a rollercoaster ride worth taking. Despite its confusing title, which may lead some to expect a lighthearted comedy or a continuation of the classic UK series, this 2024 release offers a gripping storyline that’s far from a carry-on of those past productions.

There are several possible explanations as to why some viewers might find the latest Netflix thriller, titled “Carry-On“, puzzling. It’s because it may evoke the longstanding debate about whether it falls under the category of a Christmas movie or not, similar to the classic film “Die Hard“. This debate alone could leave viewers bewildered before they even delve into the action-packed scenes of this recently released movie. As “” takes place on Christmas Eve at an airport, it’s not far off enough for some to consider it a Christmas film. However, in my opinion, “” contains more Christmas content and meets the criteria for being categorized as such.

Back in the UK, the mix-up stems from an unexpected angle. Gamers over there might’ve caught wind of the title and envisioned something entirely distinct. There was this long-running series of “Carry On” films from the 1960s that were a staple there. They were known for their risqué humor, buxom maids or matrons, and a truckload of puns and double entendres – quite the departure from what one might expect!

The series featured movies set in various locations, institutions, and eras such as “Carry On Cowboy,” “Carry On Doctor,” and “Carry On Cleo.” Therefore, a film set in an airport wouldn’t have been out of place.

For the comedy movies of 2024, there’s a completely new group of actors compared to the ones you might remember from earlier films. Since those groups don’t have any relationship with each other, this makes perfect sense. Most of the cast from the classic “Carry On” British comedies are no longer with us now. Also, unlike the lighter storylines of the original “Carry-On” series, this new film has a much more serious tone and doesn’t include the familiar humorous lines like “Oooh Matron!” that were common in those movies.

Carry-On Netflix thriller gets the must-watch vote

There is, though, a Brit right at the top of the cast list for Carry-On. Welsh actor Taron Egerton plays Ethan Kopek, a TSA officer who gets blackmailed in a huge terror plot at the Airport. Egerton is backed strongly by American actors Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, and Jason Bateman. The film has many Die Hard style touches and moments, with Bateman’s sardonic style as a mysterious traveler reminiscent at times of Hans Gruber via Alan Rickman.

When considering Egerton’s acting, it would be more appropriate to focus on his portrayal in the “Kingsman” films rather than his roles as Elton John in “Rocketman” or Olympian Ski Jumper Eddie Edwards in “Eddie the Eagle.” He embodies a unique blend of freshness and slight cockiness, yet endearing, which adds an intriguing dynamic to the suspenseful genre and creates a striking contrast with Bateman.

All in all, this film makes for an engaging viewing experience. While it might not be the typical holiday movie filled with Santa, elves, and family-friendly themes, it offers a compelling, straightforward drama with a hint of grit. If you’re seeking a change from the usual holiday chaos and are looking for something tense and thought-provoking, this should definitely be on your watchlist.
