Reflecting on a recent chat with Variety, I, as a passionate Star Wars fan who portrayed Rose Tico in The Last Jedi (2017), shared my thoughts about the harsh criticism I’ve encountered from some fans of the franchise. What strikes me is how much of this consistent negativity appears to be directed towards actors of color, a phenomenon that other talented performers like John Boyega have also spoken about.
Tran remarked, “It’s striking how often incidents like these occur for actors of color in these environments.” He believes these events reflect the broader societal environment we inhabit, and it’s truly unfortunate… We reside in a world where certain identities are used to create problems instead of understanding the bigger picture. Essentially, I want people to understand that it’s the system that needs fixing, not singling out individuals such as actors of color, queer people, or anyone who is different.

The actress, who made her public coming-out in November, will appear in the upcoming queer romantic comedy “The Wedding Banquet,” which is a remake of a 1993 film by Ang Lee. She later mentioned that she’s since managed to find roles that embrace her identity. In this way, Tran explains, she was able to reflect on past experiences of perceived persecution and realize just how absurd they seemed.
Tran explained, “I’ve managed to learn to appreciate the aspects of myself that I once feared or felt ashamed of. Over the past year, I starred in four films, all with Asian creators and some were even queer. Reflecting on this, it struck me how extraordinary it is that what I was once ostracized for, I now get to express artistically.
