James Bond Update: Amazon & Eon at ‘Impasse’ Over Future of 007 Movies

As a lifelong James Bond fan, I must say, I’m finding myself increasingly worried about the future of my beloved franchise. The ongoing tussle between Amazon and Eon Productions has left me feeling like a spectator at a tennis match with no clear winner in sight.

Right now, it’s unclear what will happen with the James Bond series because Amazon and Barbara Broccoli’s production company, Eon Productions, seem to be having difficulties reaching an agreement.

In 2021, the latest James Bond film titled “No Time to Die” hit the screens, which was Daniel Craig’s final appearance as 007. As speculation mounts about who will take on the role of the globally recognized secret agent next and when another James Bond movie might premiere, curiosity remains high.

According to The Wall Street Journal, it might be a good while before anything comes to fruition.

Over nearly three years since Amazon purchased the rights to produce Bond films through their acquisition of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studio for $6.5 billion, the partnership between the Bond franchise’s family and Amazon has essentially fallen apart. This deteriorating relationship has put a damper on any immediate plans for a new Bond movie, which is a setback for Amazon’s aspirations in Hollywood, as at the time of the MGM sale, the Bond franchise was a substantial portion of the $6.5 billion Amazon paid for the studio.

As a dedicated fan, I must acknowledge that the fate of our beloved James Bond character is under the watchful eye of Barbara Broccoli. For three decades now, she’s been the one calling the shots, determining when it’s time to bring a new Bond movie to life. She holds this power, having inherited it from her father, Albert ‘Cubby’ Broccoli.

What else do we know about the James Bond situation between Amazon and Eon?

According to sources close to the matter, Amazon has purchased MGM yet remains unable to produce any James Bond films or related projects without the participation of the Broccoli family.

Eon Productions informed The Wall Street Journal that neither Broccoli nor other relatives would make a statement regarding the topic at hand.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Broccoli expressed some doubts regarding the MGM/Amazon deal. Yet, she felt it was best not to add complexity to what many in Hollywood perceived as a substantial payment to MGM’s owners. Moreover, she and her family would maintain control over all creative aspects, including the decision of who will portray Bond.

Amazon has put forward various concepts for spin-offs, reinterpretations, and additional installments related to the James Bond franchise, to Broccoli.

Mike Hopkins delegated the sensitive duty of handling the relationship to Jennifer Salke, one of his top entertainment executives at Amazon. Salke has been in charge of Amazon Studios since 2018 and previously worked at NBCUniversal. In an initial meeting, Broccoli took offense when Salke referred to James Bond using a disliked term: ‘content.’ Using such a clinical term, as one friend observed, was like a ‘funeral bell’ to Broccoli.

At this time, no new Bond movie or project has been officially announced.
