Everything to know about Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (Knives Out 3)

As a huge fan of Rian Johnson’s intriguing whodunit films, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming release of “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.” Having closely followed the production and development of this third installment in the series since the release of “Glass Onion” in late 2022, I am eagerly anticipating another thrilling experience with detective Benoit Blanc, played masterfully by Daniel Craig.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement about “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” which ranks among the finest Netflix productions ever released, having premiered on the streaming platform in December 2022. Now, nearly two years later, we are finally getting some intriguing developments regarding the third installment in the “Knives Out” saga. The upcoming film, titled “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” boasts an exceptional ensemble of talented actors.

We shared everything we know so far about Knives Out 3!

Knives Out 3 will be released in 2025

In May 2024, Rian Johnson revealed both the title of his upcoming film, “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” and its planned release year – 2025. While he hasn’t disclosed the exact month yet, we can be sure that it won’t hit theaters in 2024.

While it may be disappointing to have to wait until next year for the third installment of the series, this timeline is not entirely unexpected. With “Glass Onion” debuting towards the end of 2022, it’s common for Netflix sequels to release about two to three years apart. We’ve only witnessed a few Netflix sequels thus far, and most follow this pattern. For instance, “Extraction” was launched in 2020, while its second part came out in 2023. Consequently, we had anticipated a comparable wait for “Knives Out 3.”

The star-studded cast

It’s no surprise that Daniel Craig will reappear in “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” as Benoit Blanc. Could a “Knives Out” film be complete without him? Furthermore, Netflix has unveiled an impressive roster of actors joining the cast for the third installment.

  • Josh O’Connor
  • Cailee Spaeny
  • Andrew Scott
  • Kerry Washington
  • Jeremy Renner
  • Mila Kunis
  • Glenn Close
  • Josh Brolin
  • Daryl McCormack
  • Thomas Haden Church

The cast boasts an exciting combination of rising talents and esteemed veterans, adding to the movie’s immense buzz. Notable newcomers include Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny. O’Connor recently shone in Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” alongside Zendaya and Mike Faist, while Spaeny graced our screens in Alex Garland’s “Civil War” and is set to star in Fede Álvarez’s “Alien: Romulus.” Additionally, Spaeny gave a remarkable performance as Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s 2023 production “Priscilla.” O’Connor’s impressive resume includes an Emmy Award for his role as Prince Charles in “The Crown.”

Just like the previous two Knives Out movies, Wake Up Dead Man will be full of A-listers.

In the initial two “Knives Out” films, Craig is the sole actor appearing in both productions. It’s likely this pattern will continue in the third installment, but Johnson may choose to include other recurring actors from the previous movies.

Two beloved characters from “Knives Out” that fans are eagerly anticipating to make a comeback in “Knives Out 3” are Janelle Monáe, who portrayed Andi and Helen Brand in “Glass Onion,” and Madelyn Cline, known for her role as Whiskey. However, neither actor’s involvement in the upcoming sequel has been officially announced yet.

Monáe expressed to ET Canada that she’d be delighted to join “Knives Out 3,” but wasn’t surprised when Johnson asked her back: “I’d be thrilled. But Rian usually doesn’t recast actors who have already appeared in ‘Knives Out,’ except for Daniel Craig, as he’s essential to play the detective Benoit Blanc.”

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel excited when hearing that Jessica Henwick and Cline expressed their interest in being part of “Knives Out 3.” Who wouldn’t want to join this intriguing and captivating series? I’m sure fans like me would be thrilled to see some familiar faces, such as Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, and Jamie Lee Curtis, potentially returning. However, it seems we might be welcoming new cast members alongside Daniel Craig. Nevertheless, you never know what twists and turns Rian Johnson has in store for us!

The movie is currently filming

With great enthusiasm, Johnson posted a picture of Craig in costume on Twitter on the 10th of June, marking the commencement of filming.

Based on my experience working in the film industry and observing production schedules for similar projects, I believe that if the cast and crew of “Wake Up Dead Man” follow a similar timeline to “Glass Onion,” they could finish filming by September of this year. However, it’s important to note that each production is unique and unforeseen circumstances can always arise.

The initial “Knives Out” film hit theaters in November 2019; it’s speculated that “Wake Up Dead Man” may follow suit with a release in November or December 2025. Bear in mind, this is merely an estimate and no official word has been given by Netflix on the specific month.

There could be more Knives Out movies after this

Currently, as of the release date, Netflix has not announced plans for a fourth “Knives Out” film. However, Daniels and Johnson shared with Deadline in 2022 that they are eager to create more installments in the “Knives Out” series featuring Benoit Blanc’s intriguing whodunnits.

Here’s what Johnson said:

Daniel and I have talked a lot about that, how the instant we feel like we’re turning the crank on another one of these, we have to stop. So, it’s very important with each one now, and the third one especially, that it feels kind of scary and dangerous. You have to shake the box.

And here’s what Craig said:

Down the line, yes, of course. I mean, if people are interested, then we’ll make them. But if there ever came a point where either Rian and I thought we were just churning them out, I think we would back away. I mean, I just don’t think that’s what either of us want to do in life. Unless people are getting genuine fun out of them, forget it.

You may have to be patient for some time before getting a chance to watch “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” but let’s keep our fingers crossed that it will be worth the wait! We’ll keep you informed with more details about the third “Knives Out” film as they become available.
