Nicole Ari Parker cast as John Stewart’s mother in DC’s Lanterns series

According to reports from Variety, Nicole Ari Parker has been added to the cast of HBO’s DC Studios drama series “Lanterns,” portraying the character Bernadette, John Stewart’s mother. In a previous role on “And Just Like That,” Parker has demonstrated her acting prowess, and she will reprise that talent in the upcoming third season of the show, airing later this year exclusively on Max.

As a devoted fan, I’d put it this way: I see Aaron Pierre stepping into the shoes of John Stewart, while Kyle Chandler breathes life into Hal Jordan. These two are part of an elite interstellar team, the Green Lantern Corps, who safeguard the universe using powerful rings that harness the power of will and imagination.

The character Bernadette is portrayed as strong-willed and relentless, never backing down even when faced with seemingly impossible obstacles. She exhibits a fierce determination to protect her family, putting their welfare above all else. In the realm of television production, DC Studios introduced Lanterns as their inaugural live-action series under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran, who serve as co-chairmen and CEOs. HBO acquired the series in June 2024 and commissioned eight episodes to be produced.

Chris Mundy, famed for his work on True Detective and Ozark, will lead the development of the new series, serving as its head writer (showrunner) and executive producer. The confirmed cast includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Ulrich Thomsen, who are set to play the Green Lantern antagonist Sinestro.

HBO has yet to reveal a specific release date for the series Lanterns. Previously, Ryan Reynolds played Hal Jordan in the 2011 movie Green Lantern. In this upcoming series, John Stewart, one of DC Comics’ early Black superheroes and a former military man, will make an appearance. Interestingly, Nathan Fillion is set to depict Green Lantern / Guy Gardner in Gunn’s forthcoming Superman film, slated for release on July 11, 2025.
