As David Gordon Green, the disappointed filmmaker, I can’t help but share my thoughts about the scrapped sequels to The Exorcist: Believer.
David Gordon Green is opening up about his scrapped sequels to The Exorcist: Believer.
In October 2023, the movie “The Exorcist: Believer” made its debut in US theaters, helmed by director Green. Initially intended to initiate a fresh trilogy of Exorcist films, this new series was unfortunately scrapped following the less-than-favorable reception of “The Exorcist: Believer” from both fans and critics
In a new development, director Mike Flanagan, known for his work on Midnight Mass, is set to helm the upcoming movie in The Exorcist series. This film won’t be an extension of Believer but instead will serve as a fresh start or reboot for the franchise
During an interview with IndieWire, director Green, currently working on the comedy-drama film “Nutcrackers” featuring Ben Stiller, shared insights about the abandoned concepts for his Exorcist sequels if they had been made
What did David Gordon Green say about the scrapped Exorcist: Believer sequels?
Revised version: “That intricate dance, with its elaborate choreography, is quite extraordinary, yet complex.”
Revised version: “I’m proposing an approach based on my professional aspirations, which centers around creative freedom and budgetary constraints so I can maintain control. This method I’ve learned quickly, [with] expectations that are limitless and really daunting. So, for me to keep that creative freedom and be able to make the choices I want… As you see with the “Halloween” movies, the choices I make aren’t always the most popular ones. So it’s trying to make something that I, and my great friends at Blumhouse and Morgan Creek, want [for] that property to be fulfilled, as much as the audience is there and has the appetite for it. I don’t think they were on the journey I was excited about taking.”
I, as a dedicated fan, understand that Green implied the sequels would have continued Ann Dowd’s unique character arc. However, it remains uncertain whether any other cast members from “Believer” would have reprised their roles in future seasons
You can watch “The Exorcist: Believer” right now on Amazon Prime Video. John Flanagan’s version of the Exorcist film is scheduled to release on March 13, 2026
