Clayface MPA Rating Revealed for DCU Movie

James Gunn has shared a major Clayface update.

The upcoming DC Universe film, titled “Clayface,” is set to debut in 2026. This movie, helmed by director James Watkins, features Tom Rhys Harries portraying the main antagonist, Clayface.

What did James Gunn say about Clayface?

Appearing on the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast, Gunn said that Clayface will be rated R.

Gunn stated that, as of now, the MPA needs to evaluate it, but given its intensity, it’s likely to receive an R rating.

Gunn also commented on the film, stating, “Clayface wasn’t originally planned for inclusion. However, Mike Flanagan presented an exciting idea for Clayface that was truly captivating. He then delivered on this idea by writing an outstanding script. What I find fascinating about Clayface is that Peter Safran and I, while working on horror films like The Belko Experiment, would have been thrilled to produce it as a standalone horror movie within the DCU. Essentially, it’s an exceptional body horror film that we would have eagerly made. It’s simply a brilliant, intelligent, entertaining, and fun horror movie in a genre I adore: body horror.

Gunn and Safran are collaborating with Matt Reeves (of The Batman) and Lynn Harris to develop the character Clayface. Chantal Nong holds the position of executive producer for this project, while Hossein Amini is also contributing as a writer. Watkins, known for films like Eden Lake (2008), The Woman in Black (2012), Bastille Day (2016), and Speak No Evil (2024), is involved in the project as well.

In the United States, Clayface is set to hit movie theaters on September 11, 2026, a production from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures. Before that, catch Superman on the big screen on July 11, 2025, followed by Supergirl on June 26, 2026, in the DC Universe.
