As a long-time fan of Tim Burton’s macabre and whimsical world, I couldn’t contain my excitement when Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hit the screens this year. The original film was a staple of my teenage years, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting its sequel for decades.
In the year 2024, thirty-six years after the initial release, the long-awaited sequel to the 1988 horror film “Beetlejuice” hit U.S. theaters on September 6th. Fans are eager to know its conclusion. Directed by Tim Burton, who also helmed the original, this new installment returns us to Winter River, Connecticut, for another thrilling tale centered around the Deetz family. As an adult, Lydia (Winona Ryder) calls upon the titular mischievous ghost/demon character (played by Michael Keaton) to protect her daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega). Together, they venture into the Neitherworld on a new adventure.
Here is what happens to Lydia and Astrid at the end of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
What happens at the end of Beetlejuice 2 and does Lydia save Astrid?
The film starts by establishing key plot elements: Lydia’s late husband, Richard, is no longer around, and she’s currently with a man called Rory. Her bond with Astrid has grown tense since Richard passed away, and the arrival of Rory only escalated the situation. The Deetz family leaves their home following Charles’ demise at the beginning of the story, returning to Winter River for his funeral. There, Astrid meets a local boy named Jeremy who turns out to be a ghost. He promises Astrid that he can help her reunite with her father and persuades her to perform a spell from “The Handbook for the Recently Deceased.” However, it’s later revealed in the movie that Jeremy has hidden intentions. He aims to re-enter the physical world by deceiving Astrid into agreeing to a deal that ultimately leads to her own downfall.
After understanding this predicament, Lydia summons Beetlejuice, whom she also knows as Betelgeuse, and consents to marry him on the condition that he assists her in rescuing her daughter before she boards the Soul Train and vanishes forever. At the same time, Delores – Betelgeuse’s vindictive ex-spouse from an era of the Black Plague and a powerful, soul-consuming supernatural force – is on the hunt for him.
In the end, Lydia rescues Astrid from Jeremy’s clutches. Betelgeuse sends Jeremy to a dreadful realm, and with Richard’s assistance, Lydia, Astrid, and others return to our world. At Rory and Lydia’s wedding, it is disclosed that Rory was only interested in Lydia for her wealth. Astrid summons a monstrous sandworm from Saturn using the Handbook, which consumes Rory and Delores when the latter crashes the ceremony. Later, Astrid cancels Betelgeuse’s agreement with Lydia through the Handbook. Lydia then expels Betelgeuse by uttering his name thrice, causing him to explode like a balloon.
As Lydia and Astrid experience their respective situations, it’s tragic to note that Delia succumbs to snakebites. Eventually, she meets up with Charles once again when they both embark on the Soul Train together.
Who is Jeremy in Beetlejuice 2?
In the chilly town of Winter River, Lydia encounters a captivating spirit named Jeremy. It’s revealed later in the movie that this boy, whom she found so appealing, was actually a ghost. As it turns out, 23 years prior to the storyline, Jeremy had tragically murdered his own parents. In a tragic twist of fate, he was subsequently killed by police officers during an attempt to apprehend him.
What does Lydia’s dream mean at the end of Beetlejuice 2?
At the start of the film, Lydia runs a paranormal talk show called Ghost House. As the story progresses, she begins experiencing premonitions about Betelgeuse and intentionally summons him to protect her daughter. As the movie nears its conclusion, Lydia shuts down Ghost House and travels with Astrid to Dracula’s castle in Romania. There, Astrid encounters a boy named Vlad and eventually marries him. However, when Astrid delivers their baby, it is revealed to be Baby Betelgeuse.
After being startled awake from a bizarre dream, Lydia finds Betelgeuse by his side. Betelgeuse remarks that the dream was “strangely peculiar,” causing Lydia to wake up once more. The events, including Astrid’s wedding, appear to be elements of an intricate dream conceived by Lydia. This suggests that Betelgeuse may still exist, in spite of previous occurrences, potentially reappearing in a future installment.
