Brendan Fraser, famous for his role in Stephen Sommers’ Mummy films, has voiced his thoughts on Tom Cruise’s unsuccessful 2017 remake. At a recent fan gathering, the 56-year-old actor (who portrayed Rick O’ Connell in the series) along with his co-stars reminisced about the franchise’s enduring appeal and its impact on popular culture.
Brendan Fraser talks about The Mummy reboot
More recently, Brendan Fraser was spotted at Fan Expo Denver with fellow cast members from The Mummy, including Oded Fehr, John Hannah, and Patricia Velasquez. Together, they engaged in a conversation about the series, led by Collider as the moderator.
During our conversation, we touched on the subject of Tom Cruise’s 2017 film remake, specifically a Universal Studios project. This movie was intended to be part of an ambitious plan to create a shared universe on screen, populated by characters such as Dr. Jekyll and The Invisible Man. Regrettably, this scheme was abandoned after the disappointing reception – both critically and financially – of another reboot, The Mummy.
The Academy Award-winning actor voiced his reflections on the film’s underperformance, expressing understanding that creating such a movie was no simple task. ” frankly, I’m at a loss,” he said, adding, “I know Tom Cruise put in a tremendous effort to make his film, and it’s not an easy thing to do!” The actor from ‘The Whale’ went on to say, “we all understand how difficult it is to produce this kind of movie…
Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Moreover, he mentioned that to succeed, it is essential to deliver what audiences truly desire. Straying from this path can lead to difficulties.
Earlier this year, Fraser had shared similar thoughts in an interview with Variety. He described Tom Cruise’s movie as a traditional horror film, but clarified that The Mummy films should not induce fear or terror. Furthermore, he expressed a willingness to reappear as Rick O’Connell if the idea for a fourth film presented was appealing enough.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, The Mummy directed by Cruise has received a 15% critical rating and a 35% audience rating. On Metacritic, the movie is given a “generally unfavorable” metascore of 34 and a user score of 4.7.
