Playism is consistently reliable for delivering diverse gaming adventures, ranging from compact arcade-style games to grandiose, badass ones, with everything in between. Their unique offerings are particularly peculiar, captivating your attention with a bizarre charm that leaves you curious and eager to explore. Glaciered is one such game – an enigmatic, underwater action game with Soulslike elements, which presents a chilling, eerie world unlike anything we know in reality.
At PAX East, I initially tried Glaciered, and it was challenging to find the right words to describe it due to its unique gameplay mechanics. This was partly because I had a limited ten-minute session, which kept my focus more on managing time than fully immersing myself in the game. Fortunately, not long after returning home, a demo of the game became available on Steam, providing a similar experience but without the pressure of a timer counting down. It’s amazing how our brain chemistry can influence our perception of time and stress levels!
The underwater world of Glaciered captivates instantly due to its otherworldly quality. Unlike any creature found in our reality, you control a being that resembles a man with bird-like features and incorporating dolphin traits. It’s an unusual combination, yet finding another description proves challenging. Alongside your journey, a disembodied voice provides cryptic hints about an impending existential danger. As a warrior of the Tuai species, you are tasked with overcoming this threat.
During the demo, you’re becoming more comfortable with Glaciered’s unique feel, as it operates on a different level compared to other Soulslikes. Remember, you’re underwater, so navigating swiftly and precisely while considering all directions is something new to get used to, especially when controlling something that doesn’t move like a human. However, in terms of combat, there are intriguing twists and combinations of familiar and unexpected elements.
In this game scenario, heat is a significant element. You can employ both light and heavy attacks as usual, but your claws gradually accumulate heat with continuous use. Pressing and holding the attack button releases this heat, causing substantial damage without draining your stamina. This mechanic brings to mind the combat style of Nero’s Red Queen from Devil May Cry 4, although you don’t need to manually rev it up. The heat aspect not only spices up the battle experience but also serves as a tool for breaking barriers in the environment. This unique feature could be particularly appealing if, like me, you find managing a stamina meter in action games increasingly tedious. Additionally, there’s a ranged attack that evokes memories of Panzer Dragoon, which is always a plus, especially when battling a colossal shark.
Beyond its action and exploration aspects, the game Glaciered appears to focus on atmosphere as well. It’s a chilling, eerie experience that leverages the unsettling mystery of the deep sea to build a rich, intricate mythology within this world. Following the trail earlier suggests it will unfold into an ambitious narrative, one that encompasses a captivating ecosystem. Learning about creatures like Colossal Squids, if they evoke both fascination and apprehension in you (and I suspect that might be me), then Glaciered seems to be aiming for that very feeling. In short, it’s intriguing.
Expressing it differently, “I truly mean my enthusiasm for wanting to explore more when it comes to Glaciered.” This game offers an enchanting blend of uneasy undersea cryptid feelings, engaging action sequences, and overall peculiarity that leaves you yearning for more even after just a brief half-hour demo. With a release window set for this very year, I can only cross my fingers in anticipation of another tantalizing glimpse into what Glaciered has thus far only hinted at.
The game titled “Glaciered” is scheduled to arrive on PCs around 2025. It’s also speculated that it might make its way to consoles later on. This preview is derived from my personal experience with the game at PAX East 2025, along with a playable demo currently accessible on Steam.
