If you’ve been encountering recurring troubles with your Xbox App on PC, I get why you’re feeling annoyed. For approximately a year, my Xbox App wouldn’t load properly. It would simply keep flashing the Xbox logo and then close after around a minute. None of the solutions I tried seemed to fix the issue for me. However, I managed to resolve it recently, so I believe this article could be useful for others facing a similar predicament.
How to fix the Xbox App not working on PC
This solution addressed all the challenges I faced, and I believe it could help you too if you’re encountering similar difficulties.
- Can’t load the Xbox App
- Xbox App stuck on launching
- Can’t load the Microsoft Store
- Cannot install games from the Microsoft Store
- “Your Microsoft account is different from your Xbox Account” error on Xbox App.
Despite my best efforts to resolve the issue by implementing various solutions detailed below, none proved successful. On several occasions, support forums suggested utilizing a repair tool within the Xbox App; however, this option wasn’t viable as the app itself wouldn’t launch. To be honest, this predicament was quite exasperating until I discovered a standalone version of the repair tool instead.
As a gamer, here’s what I’d suggest: Navigate to the Xbox Support site and locate the “Downloadable version” section. Grab the app from there and store it safely. Once downloaded, pop it open, and let it run checks on my Xbox Identity Provider, Xbox Live Auth Manager, and Gaming Services, fixing any issues that might arise during this process. After these checks are complete, fire up the Xbox App again, and if everything’s working smoothly, hit ‘Y’ on the command screen. If you encounter any problems (which I really hope won’t happen), simply press ‘N’ to send a report automatically to Microsoft for further investigation.
Other fixes that I tried
I’ll share the different solutions I’ve already tried, based on advice from multiple online forums. This way, we can check if you’ve explored all options too.
Solution 1 – Update Windows
In the majority of cases, this issue was resolved by updating the system. To do so, navigate to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update to confirm that your system is up-to-date. While this solution didn’t assist me with this specific instance, it serves as a valuable first step for addressing problems on your computer.
Solution 2 – Ensure the Xbox App is up to date
Navigate to the Microsoft Store, find the three dots located at the upper-right corner, and select “Downloads & updates”. Verify if a new update is available for your Xbox App from this menu.
Solution 3 – Run a Repair and Reset
Navigate to Settings, then Apps, followed by Installed Apps. Locate the Xbox App in the displayed list. Click the ‘More options’ (represented by three dots) next to it and opt for “Advanced settings.” Look for “Terminate” option and tap on it. Beneath that, select “Repair,” then “Reset.” Launch the app to check if this resolves the issue.
– Go to Settings, Apps, Installed Apps, find Xbox App, click ‘More options’ > “Advanced settings.” Find “Terminate,” then tap on it. Beneath that, tap “Repair” and “Reset.” Run the app to see if it works.
Solution 4 – Reinstall the Xbox App
Option: Navigate to the same advanced settings, locate the ‘Uninstall’ button, and click it. Subsequently, visit the Microsoft Store’s Xbox App page, download the application, and proceed with its reinstallation.
In the advanced menu, uninstall, then download and reinstall from the Microsoft Store’s Xbox App page.
Simplified: Uninstall it in the settings, then get a new copy from the Microsoft Store for the Xbox App.
Solution 5 – Windows Store Reset
By typing “wsreset” into the search bar within Windows and hitting enter, you can initiate the “wsreset” command with a simple click. Shortly after, a black window will appear momentarily before your Windows Store automatically restarts.
Step 6 – Install Xbox Identity Provider
Navigate to the Microsoft Store’s Xbox Identity Provider page and download the application. This software facilitates a seamless link between your Xbox PC services and Xbox Live.
Step 7 – Uninstall and reinstall Gaming Services
- Open up your PowerShell by typing “PowerShell” in the Windows search bar and launching it from the results. Ensure you open it as an Administrator by right-clicking and selecting that option.
- Copy and paste the following to uninstall gaming services – get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers
- Copy and paste the following to reinstall gaming services – start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN
Step 8 – Checking for package errors
In the PowerShell search box, run it as an administrator, then use this command: Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | ForEach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}
To execute the following PowerShell command with admin privileges, first search for it in the PowerShell box and then input this command: Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | ForEach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}.
To use the given PowerShell command with admin rights, first find it in the search box and then type this command: Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | ForEach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}.
I exhausted all other solutions, and while some suggested a complete Windows reinstall, I wasn’t keen on the hassle. Fortunately, I discovered the repair tool mentioned at the beginning of this post, which turned out to be the solution that worked for me.
