According to trusted reports, it seems that Sony Santa Monica is rumored to be developing a new Metroidvania spin-off following the acclaimed God of War: Ragnarok. However, there’s speculation that this game may have been pushed back from its initial release, as it was conspicuously absent during Sony’s 2025 E3 season State of Play presentations, according to Jeff Grubb’s claims.
In this upcoming Metroidvania-style game, it’s rumored that the central character will be a younger version of Kratos, set during his Greek period. Unlike the PS4 and PS5 games which primarily explore Kratos’ bond with his son Atreus, this prequel is said to delve into Kratos’ relationship with his own father – Zeus.
God of War Metroidvania delayed until 2026
Based on Grubb’s report, the anticipated spin-off game seems to have been delayed from its initial Holiday 2025 release and is now tentatively scheduled for a 2026 launch. The exact date within 2026 for the game’s release remains unclear, with it potentially being released at any point throughout the following year.
As a gamer, I’m all geared up for the upcoming title that folks are buzzing about. It seems this game blends the thrilling combat style of “God of War” with the dark, soulful exploration of “Blasphemous”. What’s more intriguing is the rumor that Deimos, Kratos’ long-lost brother, might make a comeback. Last we saw him was in the PSP spin-off, Ghost of Sparta. Can’t wait to see how this story unfolds!
Lastly, it’s been reported that the development of this game is supervised by Sony Santa Monica, working together with Mega Cat Studios on the project. Notably known for developing smaller games such as Backyard Baseball, Mega Cat Studios’ most significant project at present is Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit.
Among PlayStation’s most prominent franchises, God of War stands out as having the largest number of spin-offs among its ongoing series. During the PlayStation Portable (PSP) era, two prequels were launched, and the series also had a prequel on PS3 titled God of War: Ascension. Despite the numerous titles in the franchise already released, there’s always room for more!
In addition to the spin-off project, Sony Santa Monica is rumored to be developing a new primary installment in the game. This upcoming game will feature Kratos traveling to Egypt where he’ll battle a fresh pantheon of deities. As of now, no release date has been announced for this next chapter in the series.
