On June 5, 2025, the movie titled “Thug Life,” featuring Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR as the main characters, premiered on the big screen. However, due to comments made by its director, Mani Ratnam, against the Kannada language, there was a ban imposed on it in the state of Karnataka before its release.
It appears from a recent report that the movie suffered a loss of approximately 300 million rupees as it did not premiere in the Kannada-speaking area. This was confirmed in an update posted by the film’s production company, Raaj Kamal Films International.
For those who may not be aware, Kamal Haasan caused a stir in the news recently by expressing his thoughts about the Kannada language. During a pre-release event, the actor shared an opinion that Kannada originated from Tamil, which sparked a significant reaction among many people.
In response to protests by supporters of the Kannada language, demanding an apology from actor Kamal Haasan, he refused. Consequently, the Karnataka Film Board enforced a restriction on the film’s distribution, thereby limiting its availability for screening.
As a dedicated follower, I’d like to share that initially, both the Karnataka government and the Karnataka Film Chamber faced criticism from the Supreme Court of India over their management of a certain controversy. However, in a recent turn of events, the court has granted permission for the film’s release in Karnataka, expressing doubts about the actions taken by the state government and the Kannada Film Body.
Incidentally, the Supreme Court expressed apprehension about the rising tendency for resorting to violence when feelings are offended.
Moving on to Thug Life, this movie stars Kamal Haasan and STR, and it’s a gripping gangster action drama directed by Mani Ratnam. Interestingly, Kamal Haasan also contributed to the scriptwriting. The story unfolds as we follow Rangaraaya Sakthivel, a former gangster who took in a young boy named Amaran after a gunfight in Delhi.
Over time, the foster father and his charge forge a powerful connection, with Amaran emerging as a significant figure in the criminal underworld. Yet, an unexpected sequence of events stirs up resentment between them, prompting a confrontation.
The central theme of the movie revolves around the resolution of the conflict between the father and son, with the possibility of their reunion being a major focus. Besides the main actors, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Abhirami, and others play significant roles within the storyline.
In simpler terms, the action movie featuring a gangster storyline received both positive and negative evaluations from critics, yet it stands as one of the top-earning films in the Tamil film industry during the year 2025.
