2023 gameplay clips from an unannounced Dungeons & Dragons RPG that was being developed have surfaced online. Although major D&D titles are now being produced by Wizards of the Coast’s gaming division, this abandoned project had not been disclosed to the public.
According to a recent sharing by MP1ST, it appears that Hidden Path Entertainment, recognized for creating games like Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Age of Empires II HD, and Witchblood among others, has been secretly working on a new Dungeons and Dragons RPG.
CS: GO devs’ Dungeons and Dragons RPG uncovered
The leaked 10-minute video clip of the abandoned D&D game featured gameplay where players directed a group of characters in a third-person perspective. They navigated expansive, open-ended settings, engaging in live, third-person battle sequences with numerous opponents.
Under the codename Project Dante, adventurers can anticipate delving into labyrinths and unraveling enigmas, leveraging the skills of their teammates in the process. Battles will involve close-quarter, long-range, and magical engagements, with party members at your disposal to aid or even take direct control of with a simple button press.
A collection of secretly-released design sketches, supported by enthusiasts, further disclosed various creatures featured in the game, such as the dragons associated with the dungeons mentioned earlier, Tressym, and more. The game was developed later on, showcasing complete environments and complex, though unrefined, battle systems.
In 2023, Wizards of the Coast ended Project Dante and five other undisclosed projects. The termination of the project resulted in job losses at Hidden Path Entertainment, as over 44 employees were let go from the team of more than 65 developers, which may have made it difficult for them to start another project of similar scale.
Beyond Dungeons and Dragons, its creators are working on various video game projects too. One of these is a cinematic adventure game in collaboration with Star Wars Jedi director Stig Asmussen. Moreover, they’re planning to develop Baldur’s Gate 4 without Larian Studios, aiming to surpass the standards set by RPG veterans. We’ll have to wait and see how it unfolds.
