Actor Derek Dixon, who portrayed the character Dale in Tyler Perry‘s series The Oval and its offshoot, Ruthless, has filed a lawsuit against Perry. Dixon claims that he is entitled to at least $260 million in compensation due to alleged incidents of harassment and assault, as well as other charges.
Why is Tyler Perry getting sued?
On June 13th, lawyers for actor Derek Dixon submitted a complaint against Tyler Perry in the Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging that Perry had sexually assaulted Dixon. The court documents state, “Mr. Perry leveraged his fame and industry clout to establish a manipulative, sexually exploitative environment towards Mr. Dixon; at first offering him potential career growth and creative prospects such as producing his pilot and casting him in his show, but subsequently subjecting him to increasing sexual harassment, assault, battery, and professional retribution,” according to AP News.
According to Dixon’s lawsuit, it was during one of Perry’s parties in 2019 that Perry first took notice of Dixon, who was part of the event staff. Later, Dixon was given a role in Ruthless, a spin-off series of The Oval, and eventually joined the main cast of The Oval. However, the lawsuit claims that Perry used the tactic of threatening to kill off Dixon’s character as a means to sustain an unsettling work environment marked by “sexual harassment.” Specifically, it is alleged that Perry made it clear to Dixon that if he did not comply with Perry’s sexual advances or failed to respond to the innuendos, his character would meet an untimely demise.
The lawsuit also claims that Perry is accused of attacking Dixon on various different instances, such as one instance where Perry forcefully removed Dixon’s clothes, touched his backside inappropriately, and tried to compel himself onto Dixon.
In response to accusations made against him, Tyler Perry’s lawyer, Matthew Boyd, has refuted all claims. Boyd countered the lawsuit by saying, “It seems this person was merely trying to deceive Perry, who they had grown close to, for what now appears to be a fraudulent scheme.
