Dead by Daylight director on Hellraiser content removal: ‘Forever contracts don’t exist’

Back in the early part of this year, something truly disheartening transpired for Behaviour Interactive – the license for Hellraiser expired, leading to the removal of related content from Dead by Daylight’s market. This was actually the second time such an unfortunate event occurred, yet Mathieu Cote, Game Director and Partnerships Head, had pledged to avoid a repeat if possible. Regrettably, as it turns out, navigating the licensing of intellectual properties often proves as challenging as sailing through treacherous waters, and in this instance, there was no way to secure an everlasting contract.

In a recent chat, Cote discussed the topic of the Hellraiser content being removed from Dead by Daylight, reflecting on the victories and hurdles experienced over the past nine years since the game’s release. Unavoidably, the issue of Hellraiser content, taken down from the in-game marketplace in April, was raised.

Additionally, Cote notes that it’s rare for a license agreement to endure perpetually; most have limited durations.

It appears that no matter how strong a deal Behaviour strikes with collaborators, they are still bound by licensing agreements that can expire. However, Cote has ensured that something crucial for Dead by Daylight players will remain post-collaboration and content release – the content itself.
