Outrage As Influencer Couple Turn Historic Slave Property Into Home And Private Gym

Monet McMichael and Jalen Noble have received significant backlash for their recent purchase and public display of an old Texas property that holds a painful chapter in American history.

Critics are accusing them of being tactless and failing to show empathy, yet the pair has remained silent on the matter; instead, they’ve been leveraging it for publicity and increased attention.

The House That Sparked It All

The events unfolded when Jalen Noble shared information about the couple’s recent real estate acquisition on their social media platforms.

Although the house was simply called a “guest house,” people soon discovered its rich history, noting that it may have strong, poignant connections to America’s past.

A lot of followers found the posts’ tones disconcerting, alleging that the couple seemed unmindful of the grim past associated with the property.

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and discomfort as Monet proudly showcases their latest addition – a home gym nestled within what was once slave quarters. It’s hard not to appreciate the fitness setup, but it’s equally difficult to ignore the haunting history that clings to this space. It’s like they’re flaunting their lifestyle without giving a second thought to the past.

The situation became more strained when Jalen’s remarks were perceived by some as a jest regarding the historical importance of the site.

To many people, it went beyond just the physical structure of the house; they were equally concerned about how it was depicted digitally, often neglecting or disregarding the possible history behind it.

The core problem isn’t merely their purchase of the property. It stems from their disregard for its painful past, viewing it as nothing more than an adorable and stylish dwelling. Instead of addressing valid concerns raised by viewers, they opted to provoke people in the comments section, exacerbating the situation further.

My observation is that despite having the freedom to reside anywhere, Jalen and Monet have chosen to make their home on a former plantation, seemingly unwilling to recognize or address its historical significance as a site of slavery.

No Public Response – Yet

So far, Monet and Jalen have stayed silent.

They’ve failed to respond to the criticism, they’ve not made things clear about the actual past of the property, and they haven’t offered an apology for how it was previously presented.

People’s quietness seems to be sparking even more discussions online, with some thinking they are exploiting the situation for anger-provoking content and increased views.

Why This Hit A Nerve

The opposition extends beyond this specific location; it’s rooted in a wider discontent towards the manner in which influencers tend to view historical sites as mere fashionable backdrops, ignoring or disregarding their profound significance.

In this situation, a lot of people believe that purchasing a property with ties to slavery and using it as a charming vacation rental or fitness studio without acknowledging its past seems insensitive, regardless of the property owner’s personal background.

It’s also worth noting that both Monet and Jalen are biracial, not fully Black.

Although it doesn’t eliminate their link to Black culture and heritage, it introduces a new perspective to the discussion, particularly in contexts deeply associated with the hardships and narratives of enslaved Africans.

A Bigger Problem: Insensitivity And Lack Of Awareness

As a gamer, I’ve found myself caught up in a heated debate that’s made me pause and reflect. It seems to me this argument underscores an underlying problem – the casual disregard and jarring lack of sensitivity when addressing slavery and its enduring effects.

In moments such as these, it becomes evident that there’s much work left undone as we strive to recognize, grasp, and honor the difficult periods in our shared past.

A considerable number of individuals, even famous ones, have chosen to get married on historical plantation sites, a practice that seems insensitive, disrespectful, and quite bewildering.

Why might someone opt to commemorate the most joyful moment of their existence in a location that has been associated with the enslavement, torment, rape, death, and lynching of African Americans?

These were sites of unimaginable suffering. Pain that still echoes today.

When we consider influencers, the issue seems exponentially larger. Regrettably, past traumas are frequently exploited as a stylistic element or a scenic setting for content.

In simpler terms, everyday problems and unfairness are often simplified into catchy social media posts or viral videos, primarily to boost interaction and views.

In a society where popularity sometimes overshadows substance, it’s a stark contrast to see that some influencers seem to exist in a realm detached from the historical struggles and ongoing suffering experienced by countless individuals worldwide.

Should influencers be held more accountable when showcasing historic spaces?
