Nag Ashwin recalls being depressed after he had to drop a movie idea due to similarities with Christopher Nolan’s Inception

On a recent talk show, the director Nag Ashwin of the future film Kalki (Year 2898 AD) reminisced about an earlier concept for a movie that shared some resemblance with Christopher Nolan’s Inception.

In a video posted on Gulte, the director is captured discussing the difficulties that writers encounter. While speaking, he mentioned that often, including himself, writers create something, but later notice similar ideas or films emerging in the same genre.

When prompted for specific instances, Ashwin reminisced about an antiquated film concept of his that bore resemblance to Christopher Nolan’s Inception, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role.

The director mentioned, “I had a concept somewhat like Inception around 2008, it revolved around memories whereas Inception was about dreams. Upon watching the trailer of Inception, I felt quite down for almost a week.” (Loosely translated from Telugu.)

2010 saw the release of Christopher Nolan’s science fiction action thriller, Inception, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the main character. This film tells the story of an expert burglar who specializes in extracting secrets from people by delving into their unconscious minds.

If granted a second chance to make amends for his past mistakes and erase his criminal record, he is presented with a unique opportunity – planting an idea into someone’s subconscious mind. Besides Leonardo DiCaprio, the movie boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Elliot Page, and numerous others in significant roles.

The movie was incredibly successful in cinemas, earning lots of awards, and garnering positive reviews from critics.

Speaking of Nag Ashwin’s recent directorial ventures, he was last seen guiding the production of Kalki 2898 AD. This upcoming movie features Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan as its main stars. The story is an epic sci-fi tale unfolding in a post-apocalyptic, futuristic universe.

The movie takes ideas from the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata, and includes various aspects from it.
