James Gunn Clarifies if Starfire TV Show Is Part of DCU

James Gunn has explained if the upcoming animated Starfire TV series falls within the continuity of the DC Universe.

The DC Universe created by Gunn and Peter Safran began in December with the release of the animated Creature Commandos series. Coming up next for the DCU is Gunn’s Superman, set for release in July, followed by the Season 2 premiere of Peacemaker on Max in August.

Recently, it was announced that DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation are developing an animated series focusing on the popular Teen Titans character Starfire, created by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez. The release date for this series aimed at a younger audience is yet to be determined.

Is the new Starfire show part of the DCU canon?

In a recent discussion about threads, Gunn was queried whether Starfire belongs to the DC Universe, an Elseworlds scenario, or if her status is still uncertain at present.

“Starfire is Elseworlds, as are most our family animated shows,” Gunn answered.

It’s important to mention that Starfire appeared briefly and without dialogue in Creature Commandos, suggesting there might be more DC Universe plans for her down the line. Yet, the specifics of these possible plans remain undisclosed.

On the new Starfire series, it’s Josie Campbell who holds the position of executive producer, with Brianne Droughard working alongside as a co-executive producer.

The series chronicles her journeys beyond her home planet Tamaran, as she explores the cosmos with a spaceship she found. Along the journey, she’ll encounter characters like Crush, a space biker, Fern who loves plants, and the mystical Princess Amethyst from Gemworld. Together they will delve into the farthest corners of the DC universe, rescue Space Dolphins, ride colorful nebulas, and fearlessly venture into the unknown. (As reported by Variety)

In addition to revealing Stafire, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation have also unveiled plans for two upcoming animated series: My Journey with Green Lantern and DC Superhero Powers.
