GKIDS has officially disclosed that the Ghost Cat Anzu will be available for Blu-ray and digital purchase starting on a specific date, marking the release of their latest fantasy-themed, coming-of-age anime movie adapted from Takashi Imashiro’s manga with the same title. Following its U.S. premiere in theaters last November 2024, fans can now look forward to enjoying this captivating movie at home.
12-year-old Karin, an advanced child, unexpectedly gets left behind by her father in rural Japan. She resides in a temple with her grandfather and encounters Anzu, a large spirit cat often labeled as lazy, who is assigned to look after her. Initially wary of Anzu, Karin undermines his tasks for the townspeople, instead forming friendships with the peculiar forest spirits. In an attempt to gain Karin’s trust, Anzu inadvertently strikes a bargain with the devil, leading to chaos and turmoil.
When is the Ghost Cat Anzu Blu-ray & digital release dates?
Beginning January 26th, you’ll be able to either rent or purchase digitally Ghost Cat Anzu across various platforms. The Blu-ray version with bonus features will become available on March 4th. Since its release, the film has garnered a 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from over 50 reviews, according to Popcornmeter.
The anime film is helmed by directors Yôko Kuno and Nobuhiro Yamashita, boasting music by Keiichi Suzuki (known for EarthBound). The talented cast includes Mirai Moriyama portraying Anzu, Noa Gotô as Karin, Munetaka Aoki as Tetsuya, Miwako Ichikawa as Yuzuki, and Keiichi Suzuki in the role of Oshô, among others. This film marks Yôko Kuno’s first feature-length directorial venture; it was initially filmed live action, from which the animation was rotoscoped. It is a collaborative production between Shin-Ei Animation and Miyu Productions, with Shout! Studios overseeing its distribution.
