As a fan who has witnessed Eleanor Matsuura‘s captivating performances in shows like “I Used to be Famous” and “The Walking Dead,” it’s truly exhilarating to see her shine yet again, this time in “The Day of the Jackal.” This British series, based on Frederick Forsyth’s novel, has been hailed as one of the best shows of 2024 by critics.
Supporters of “The Walking Dead” fondly recall Eleanor Matsuura, who played Yumiko in the show’s later seasons. Now, Matsuura is featured in one of Peacock’s top series for 2024, titled “The Day of the Jackal“.
Independent TV reviewer Nick Hilton put together and graded the top 20 TV programs of 2024. Peacock’s original production, “The Day of the Jackal,” came in at number 10 on the list. This series debuted in November 2024 and has garnered critical acclaim, leading to a renewal for a second season.
In the gaming world, I’d say: “I’ve been hooked on ‘The Jackal’, a gripping series that mirrors Frederick Forsyth’s novel of the same name. It even inspired Universal Pictures’ Oscar-winning film in 1973! The script was crafted by Ronan Bennet, who also worked on Michael Mann’s ‘Public Enemies’. Brian Kirk, known for directing hits like ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Luther’, and ‘Boardwalk Empire’, helms this production. Anthony Philipson, Paul Wilmshurst, and Anu Menon are among the other talented directors contributing to this thrilling ride.
The narrative centers around a solitary assassin, known as the Jackal, who makes a living by executing contracts for the most profitable clients. Despite evading capture throughout his career, a tenacious investigator has taken interest in him, potentially leading to his downfall. The Jackal is portrayed as engaging in an exhilarating game of cat-and-mouse that spans across various European cities.
The Day of the Jackal cast
In a more straightforward rephrasing: Eddie Redmayne takes on the role of the relentless assassin, simply known as the Jackal. Lashana Lynch stars as Biana Pullman, an MI6 agent who is also an expert in firearms, and she’s assigned to track down the Jackal. Matsuura portrays Zina Jansone, a liaison between the Jackal and her powerful employer, Timothy Winthrop (Charles Dance).
Joining the main cast are Úrsula Corberó, Chukwudi Iwuji, Lia Williams, Khalid Abdalla, Jonjo O’Neill, Nick Blood, and Sule Rimi. Richard Dormer makes a special appearance, while Florisa Kamara, Kate Dickie, and Patrick O’Kane take on recurring roles in the series.
Currently, the eight-episode series is being broadcast on Sky Atlantic, Now, and Peacock. A fresh episode is made available each week. The storyline will culminate in a two-part finale scheduled for December 12th.
Matsuura took to social media to thank fans for tuning into the series.
Matsuura boasts an impressive acting resume with standout performances in titles such as “Into the Badlands,” “The One and Only Ivan,” “Feel Good,” and my personal pick, the Netflix original “I Used to be Famous,” which also features Ed Skrein (from “All the Light We Cannot See”) and Leo Lang (“Professor T”).
