As a Porsche enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming auction at RM Sotheby’s! What’s on the block is no ordinary 911 – it’s a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight, with chassis number 9113600446. This vehicle is one of the 200 M471 “Lightweight” models ever produced, and even more rare, as only 17 were built in right-hand drive.
This particular gem was originally owned by gentleman racer Dan Margulies, who took it to the 1973 Targa Florio, where it finished an impressive 18th overall and 4th in class alongside co-driver Andrew Hedges. Now, I can hardly wait to see if it fetches a high bid!
As a devoted enthusiast, I’ve had the privilege of working with esteemed Ulster rally legends like Reggie McSpadden and Esler Crawford, and even raced the iconic “0446” extensively in Irish rallies during the late 1970s. In a remarkable turn of events, I managed to clinch the 1977 Ulster Rally outright, a moment that still fills me with pride. Post-race, the car underwent an immaculate restoration by Francis Tuthill in the 1990s, and since then, it’s remained in the careful hands of private collectors, accumulating only about 52,300 miles to date.
This unique 1967 Porsche 911 RS 2.7 Lightweight proudly sports its authentic Comstock Racing livery and registration, accompanied by exceptional documentation such as the original AFN invoice, race entry forms, and even a Targa Florio scrutineering sticker. Boasting an ultra-rare configuration, proven racing success, and exceptional preservation, this vehicle is among the most significant customer 911s ever produced. Recently, RM Sotheby’s has made available this rare gem in their latest Sealed Drop auction, with the final results still to be revealed at the time of writing.
