It appears that we are left wondering what our next steps should be now, as “Outer Banks” Season 4 Part 2 was released on November 7, concluding the penultimate season of this teen drama with its most heart-wrenching moment to date. The Pogues are rushing off to Morocco in search of the Blue Crown, but a sudden, unforeseen tragedy occurs that will cast a long shadow over the series as it approaches its fifth and final season.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my awe as I reflect on the season 4 finale of Outer Banks. This show has always been about swinging for the fences, and never has that been more evident than now. If you’re still reeling from the events that unfolded in the finale, let’s delve into the two most pressing observations and speculate on what lies ahead for our beloved Pogues in season 5.
Here’s your last spoiler warning!
The Pogues (and Rafe) find the Blue Crown
Upon reaching Morocco, both the Pogues and Rafe try to stay united but wind up losing each other. The Pogues resort to survival tactics to board a vessel that might lead them to the Blue Crown, while Rafe embarks on a lone quest to locate Groff and the scroll. Characteristically reckless, Rafe snatches the scroll and shoves Groff into a well, seemingly abandoning him. Later, the Pogues stumble upon the well, but despite Groff’s pleas for help, JJ chooses not to rescue his biological father.
Afterward, the Pogues and Rafe reunite and collaborate once more following the instance when Sarah rescued him from Dalia and her armed group. They eventually discover a sanctuary; however, Rafe faces difficulty in trusting the Pogues and Sarah. His resentment towards Sarah, stemming from his belief that she was responsible for their father’s demise, lingers. Yet, there comes a time when Sarah shares with him how Ward sacrificed himself to save her life, creating an unexpectedly heartwarming exchange between them. Drew Starkey’s portrayal of Rafe’s emotions makes it effortless to sympathize with him, despite his continued shortcomings.
As they locate the whereabouts of the Blue Crown due to a distinct symbol on the map under the sun, a sandstorm, metaphorically speaking, of great turmoil erupts. The storm brings about confusion and reduced visibility. In this chaos, Cleo gets wounded, Pope exacts revenge on Lightner for Terrance, Sarah saves John B’s life, Rafe sustains an injury to his hand… It’s quite a chaotic scene. However, JJ chooses to climb the monument while Rafe takes down mercenaries, and in the calm center of the lion-shaped statue, JJ successfully retrieves the Blue Crown. All their hard work finally bears fruit!
Rest in peace, JJ
Fortunately, JJ and Kiara manage to evade Dalia before she has a chance to fire at them, but unfortunately for Kiara, she collides with Groff who had managed to break free from the well. It seems that the villainous fathers in this series possess an extraordinary amount of lives! With Kiara held at knife-point, Groff demands the Blue Crown from JJ under threat of Kiara’s life. Cautiously, JJ hands over the crown as Kiara is freed and finds safety behind him. Sadly, it appears they had not fully escaped the danger yet. Indeed, Groff harbored other sinister intentions.
In a fit of petty, unruly vengeance, Groff plunges a knife into JJ’s abdomen because he didn’t receive a rope and was abandoned in a well. As if that weren’t heartbreaking enough, JJ’s biological father flees with the Blue Crown while Kiara is left to witness the man she adores succumbing to his wounds. After exchanging “I love you,” JJ breathes his last breath. The other Pogues (and Rafe) gather around Kiara and express their sorrow over the loss of their valiant and devoted comrade, who truly deserved a better life and more loving parents.
In a turn of events, Groff manages to keep the crown and commit murder, though his son was the victim (it’s worth noting that he also killed his wife, JJ’s mother!). The Pogues are left seething with anger and sorrow around a campfire. Rafe suggests they should pursue Groff in Lisbon, as revenge for JJ is what he deserves. Kiara and John B both believe that if one of them had died, JJ wouldn’t sit idly by – he would take action. The season concludes with Kiara vowing to exact revenge on Groff for the loss of JJ.
See, it’s a MASSIVE swing for Outer Banks to take by killing off one of the Pogues. But this just makes the final adventure and mission in season 5 that much more personal. Nothing will light a fire under them like the grief of their beloved friend’s untimely death. Rafe, too, has reason to get revenge on Groff, so they’re surprisingly lucky to have him on their side. It’s a daring plot twist to kill JJ, but going into the final season, it’s the shakeup of stakes the series needed. Rest in peace, Jayj!
