SS Rajamouli regrets missing out on working with Suriya, lauds Kanguva actor’s skills and onscreen charisma

As an ardent fan of both Suriya and SS Rajamouli, I find myself utterly enthralled by the revelation that these two cinematic titans almost collaborated. If only I had a time machine, I’d go back to convince Suriya to accept the role in Baahubali! Alas, such is life – filled with missed opportunities and tantalizing “what-ifs.

At a promotional event for the film “Kanguva,” starring Suriya, its chief guest SS Rajamouli expressed remorse over never having worked with the actor in the past. Onstage, the director of “RRR” admitted that he was the one who had missed out on collaborating with Suriya.

In a video posted by Suresh PRO, the director expressed that during a function, it was actually him who missed an opportunity to work with Suriya, as his admiration for the actor’s talent and on-screen presence runs so deep. He also praised Suriya for his commitment to choosing films based on their stories, rather than the filmmaker involved.

Back then, director SS Rajamouli first extended an invitation for Suriya to join the epic Baahubali series. Yet, the role was declined by the actor as he wasn’t content with the character he was proposed to portray.

On multiple instances, Suriya has acknowledged his regret for not collaborating with the renowned director on a grand-scale project. He’s openly stated that refusing the opportunity was one of his life’s mistakes, and if given the chance, he would gladly work with Rajamouli in a film.

In the future, Suriya prepares for the premiere of his film titled Kanguva, which was helmed by Siva. The upcoming production combines elements of fantasy and action, with Suriya portraying two distinct characters: a tribal fighter from ancient times and a police officer who exists 700 years in the future as a shadow figure.

In addition to Bobby Deol and Disha Patani, who are making their Tamil cinema debuts as leading actors, several other notable performers such as Yogi Babu, Redin Kingsley, Natarajan Subramaniam, Kovai Sarala, and many more are also part of the main cast. This film is reported to be one of the costliest productions in Indian cinema history and there’s speculation that it will have a sequel too.

Meanwhile, filmmaker SS Rajamouli is presently working on his upcoming project with actor Mahesh Babu, provisionally titled either SSMB29 or SSRMB. This film is rumored to be an action-packed adventure that spans the globe and is slated to start filming in January 2025.
