Gundam Movie Finds Director for Live-Action Adaptation

As a die-hard fan of the Gundam franchise since my childhood days spent hunched over my Model Kit Gunpla, I can hardly contain my excitement over this latest development! The fact that Jim Mickle, the brilliant mind behind Sweet Tooth, is now at the helm has me positively beaming.

News just broke about an exciting development in the long-awaited Gundam movie: Deadline reports that a director has been appointed for the project. Notably, this film will no longer be associated with Netflix.

Who is directing the Gundam movie?

Jim Mickle, famously recognized for his role as showrunner for Netflix’s Sweet Tooth, has been selected to pen and direct an upcoming movie project. At present, few details about the film have been disclosed, but Deadline hinted that production is expected to commence in 2025.

Additionally, Deadline has announced that while a new director has been appointed for the upcoming Gundam film, neither Netflix nor its previous director (Jordan Vogt-Roberts) are currently part of the project. Earlier plans for a live-action adaptation of Gundam had involved Legendary Entertainment, with ties to Netflix and Vogt-Roberts dating back to 2021.

On the other hand, Deadline notes that neither party is connected to the movie now, making it uncertain if Legendary has teamed up with another entity or plans to distribute the film in cinemas directly.

One of the most famous anime franchises ever is the Gundam series, which made its first appearance in 1979. It was conceived by Hajime Yatate and Yoshiyuki Tomino. The narrative primarily revolves around diverse military factions who employ enormous mobile combat machines, commonly referred to as “Gundams,” for engaging in conflicts against each other.

The franchise has produced over 50 TV shows, numerous movies, OVAs, manga, books, video games, and a line of plastic model kits called Gunpla that took over the Japanese toy market since its creation. Gundam is widely recognized as the pioneer and defining force behind the “robot anime” genre, which features mechanized or robotic characters.
