That '90s Show canceled at Netflix, but there's still (very little) hope

As a seasoned gamer and a devoted fan of ’90s sitcoms, I must admit that hearing about the cancellation of “That ’90s Show” left me reeling like a character in a classic FPS game who’s just been hit by an unexpected sniper shot. The series was a delightful blend of nostalgia and fresh storytelling, and it’s a pity to see it go.

Sad update from Point Place, Wisconsin: Netflix has unfortunately ended production on That ’90s Show following its second season. While we mourn this news, series lead and co-creator Kurtwood Smith has hinted at a potential revival for fans to look forward to.

In simpler terms, Smith wrote, “As Red Forman might say… we’re not going to be fools about this… we’ll make sure the show is a success because great grandparents would work hard to help these kids graduate from high school,” in his Instagram post for fans of That ’90s Show.

As a devoted fan, I must admit, it’s uncertain where the sitcom “That ’90s Show” might find its next home, given the dwindling viewership during the two-part release of season 2 this summer. The June and August premieres attracted just 1.8 million views for part 2, with part 3 failing to even make it into Netflix’s weekly top 10 most popular shows ranking.

That ’90s Show canceled and probably won’t be saved

It appears that despite the strong brand reputation of “That ’70s Show”, there doesn’t seem to be enough appeal for another streaming service or network to gamble and continue the series for another season, given its exclusive streaming on Peacock. It’s highly improbable that NBCUniversal’s streamer would take up the sequel series either.

Following the broadcast, the television industry has become increasingly unpredictable as broadcasters, streaming platforms, and production houses are working to cut and optimize their budgets. However, it’s worth noting that even though relocating a series can be a challenging financial undertaking, it’s not an impossible feat. For instance, Netflix successfully rescued the show “One Day at a Time” after its cancellation.

As much as I’d love to imagine “That ’90s Show” finding a new home on another streaming platform, let’s not set our expectations too high for now. The fact remains that Netflix currently holds the rights for all three seasons of the show, which could make things tricky if we’re hoping for a rescue. Contrary to “Girls5eva” moving from Peacock to Netflix, the details in this case are still unclear. So, let’s keep our fingers crossed and stay tuned for more updates!

Unfortunately, the show That ’90s Show ended abruptly, leaving us hanging on a cliffhanger: Leia’s trust in Jay faltered just before she embarked on her first school year in Point Place. If the series doesn’t get revived and picked up elsewhere, we may never find out what becomes of Leia and her friends beyond this point. Future seasons would have depicted the storyline shifting from summer to other seasons as Leia fully moved in with her grandparents.

It’s certainly disappointing for fans of the series who were eagerly anticipating additional episodes, as That ’90s Show has now been added to the small collection of Netflix shows axed in 2024. The list of series that Netflix has renewed is brimming with successes like Emily in Paris, Owning Manhattan, The Gentlemen, and many others. Here’s to wishing for a miracle that could bring the sitcom back, but for now, it seems unlikely that Point Place’s next generation will return.
