Star Wars Outlaw only sold a million copies in its first month

As a long-time gamer and avid follower of the gaming industry, I must admit that the performance of Star Wars Outlaws has left me rather disappointed. Having grown up with the Star Wars universe, I was eagerly anticipating this game, hoping for an immersive and exciting experience. However, the dismal sales figures reported by Insider Gaming are a stark reminder that not all games live up to their potential.

Despite many of us enjoying Star Wars Outlaws (check out our review), it seems that a large number of people didn’t feel the same way. This unfortunate news adds to Ubisoft’s ongoing struggles, as they recently disclosed to their investors that XDefiant isn’t meeting expectations, and just last week, Assassin’s Creed Shadows was delayed.

Star Wars Outlaws was one of the worst-performing AAA games of the year

According to reports by Insider Gaming, the initial sales for Star Wars Outlaws reached a total of 1 million during its first four weeks on shelves.

Insider Gaming hasn’t been able to learn what the expected sales figure was for Star Wars Outlaws, but we have secured a current sales figure from sources close to the game. At the time of writing [September 30, 2024], Star Wars Outlaws has just ticked over one million sales worldwide.

To put that figure in context, here is how other AAA games performed this year:

  • Helldivers II sold 8 million units in its first month
  • Black Myth: Wukong sold 20 million units in its first month
  • Palworld sold 15 million units in its first month
  • Dragon’s Dogma II sold 2.5 million units in its first month
  • Space Marine 2 sold over 2 million units in a single day

It’s clear that the Star Wars Outlaws game did not sell well for Ubisoft, and if the reported sales of 1 million copies are accurate, this underperformance would be even more disheartening considering the vast popularity of the Star Wars intellectual property.

It’s worth considering if the Ubisoft brand has become so stained that it discourages prospective customers. Nowadays, people often expect a common open-world gameplay, regardless of the marketing promises. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for them to create something truly groundbreaking soon and steer their ship in a new direction.

Have you ever given Outlaws a try, and do you believe it’s as poorly made as the figures might imply? Actually, we found enjoyment in the game, despite its numerous issues.
