As it was my initial Emma Barry novel, I wasn’t sure what to anticipate, having not even glanced at the summary beforehand. However, I must admit that the book took me by surprise in a pleasant way. I’d like to express my gratitude to Over the River PR for providing me with an early review copy, allowing me to dive into this captivating story earlier than expected.

Bad Reputation is a romance for millennial fangirls!
Without initially appealing to everyone, let me explain the book’s content beforehand. The story introduces us to Maggie, once a drama teacher who lost her job after attempting to stage a play for high school students. Despite the play’s intended audience, parents and the school board objected vehemently, leading to her dismissal. This incident triggered a lengthy court case and ultimately made Maggie lose affection for teaching.
As a result, she finds herself appearing on a talk show, where she encounters the producer of Waverley who subsequently offers her the position of intimacy coordinator for the show. The actor starring in this production is Cole James, who gained fame for his role in a teen drama and has since been primarily associated with that character. Regrettably, many doubt his ability to handle a part in Waverley.
Despite Cole and Maggie becoming friends right away, it turns out that Tasha, another lead character in the show, has difficulty connecting with Maggie due to past experiences with an exploitative producer. This backstory involves a traumatic event, so be aware that there are sensitive scenes featuring Tasha throughout the narrative.
The book not only delivers a captivating love story but also offers an enlightening portrayal of the role of an intimacy coordinator and their duties. This position is rarely discussed and hasn’t been explored in a romance novel I’ve encountered before. Frankly, it added an exciting twist to the usual Hollywood-style romance narrative, making it all the more intriguing.
Another aspect I found captivating was the deliberate and suspenseful development of Maggie and Cole’s romance. It was evident that they were careful not to overstep professional boundaries, yet watching their struggle with mutual attraction was intriguing. Although the storyline followed a somewhat expected trajectory, it was thrilling to witness how their relationship unfolded in the end.
In conclusion, I found Cole’s character truly captivating and the way it was presented was remarkable. It’s not uncommon for teen actors and child stars to experience similar challenges, yet often we only see them as their characters. However, I believe Emma Barry handled this exceptionally well by illustrating the depth behind the character that many of us struggle to comprehend.
