Inside Out 2 Beats The Lion King at Worldwide Box Office

As someone who has grown up with Disney and Pixar movies being an integral part of my childhood memories, I must say that the success of Inside Out 2 over The Lion King (2019) is nothing short of astounding! It’s like reliving those magical moments all over again, but this time with a sequel that has surpassed its predecessor in terms of box office earnings.

The follow-up to Disney/Pixar’s 2024 film Inside Out 2, which hit theaters in the U.S. on June 14, 2024, has outperformed Disney’s 2019 adaptation of The Lion King at the worldwide box office. To date, Inside Out 2 has grossed over $1.666 billion globally, surpassing the $1.6569 billion earned by The Lion King at the ticket counter.

Inside Out 2 overtakes 2019’s The Lion King in the worldwide box office

Over the past week, I’ve been thrilled to share the news that Inside Out 2 has outperformed The Lion King remake at the global box office. As of this past Sunday, September 1st, Inside Out 2 has amassed an impressive $1.666.2 billion! This places it in ninth position on the list of all-time highest-grossing films, nudging ahead of The Lion King’s total of $1.6569 billion from 2019.

In contrast to Disney’s remake of The Lion King, which cost around $250-$260 million to produce, Inside Out 2 managed to generate substantial box office earnings while having a lower production budget of only $200 million.

Back in 2015, I was totally hooked on the original Inside Out movie, which raked in a whopping $858.8 million worldwide. Now, that’s some serious box office magic! But guess what? The sequel just about blew me away with its earnings. It’s clear that Disney has been nailing it with their strategies for sequels, spin-offs, and remakes – the success of Inside Out 2 is a testament to that!

2024 Summer was an exceptional season for Disney, with a plethora of blockbusters gracing the big screen. Alongside Inside Out 2, Disney Studio also released Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (under 20th Century Studios), Young Woman and the Sea (Walt Disney Studios), Deadpool & Wolverine (Marvel Studios), Alien: Romulus (20th Century Studios), Kinds of Kindness (Searchlight Pictures), and The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat (Searchlight). Notably, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes grossed nearly $400 million globally. As of last weekend, Deadpool & Wolverine and Alien: Romulus are still playing in theaters, with their earnings at $1.258 billion and $283.5 billion respectively. (Based on Deadline)
