Good news, One Chicago fans, NBC hasn't ordered shortened seasons

As a dedicated fan of the One Chicago shows, I’ve been through quite the rollercoaster ride these past few years. The ongoing strikes in Hollywood disrupted the 2023-2024 TV season like never before, leaving us all on edge. But now, with production about to start again and a confirmed episode count for each show, I can’t help but feel a renewed sense of excitement.

Before the filming begins on the One Chicago series, there’s been much curiosity among fans regarding the number of episodes each show will consist of. I’m glad to inform you that we have a definite answer to that query!

During the summer of 2023, unexpected WGA and SAG strikes caused a significant halt in Hollywood production, disrupting the plans for the 2023-2024 TV season. Consequently, the usual fall debut of new shows was delayed. When the strikes finally ended in November, networks were compelled to act swiftly to reschedule their programming.

As a longtime fan of police procedurals and medical dramas, I was thrilled when NBC announced the premiere dates for their new Chicago-based series, Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med. Having grown up in the Windy City myself, I couldn’t wait to see how these shows would portray the gritty reality of life in Chicago’s emergency services.

As a devoted fan, I’d express it this way: Each season of Chicago Fire and Chicago PD consisted of 13 episodes, which was more than some other networks offered. And both shows made the most of their episode counts, delivering compelling storylines. For instance, Chicago Fire saw the departures of beloved characters like Kidd and Boden, while Chicago PD said goodbye to Tracy Spiridakos’ Upton.

The final episodes of all three shows aired in May, and it seems that production is planning to begin anew in August. NBC has announced that the next seasons of “One Chicago” will premiere on Wednesdays, starting September 25th.

Fans have been speculating if they will receive fewer episodes or a whole year of enjoyment due to recent developments. Fortunately, we now have clarity on the situation.

How many episodes will the One Chicago shows have?

According to TVLine’s report, each of the One Chicago shows is expected to consist of the typical 22 episodes in the upcoming seasons.

Fans of all shows will be pleased with the news that each series will have 22 episodes, following the traditional pattern for all three. However, this wasn’t the case during the 2020-2021 season due to COVID-19 restrictions limiting production to just 16 episodes per series. There were also concerns that NBC might attempt cost savings by reducing the episode count, thereby sparing expenses on cast and production costs.

Fortunately, NBC understands that adhering to the traditional 22-episode count per series is essential for fans’ satisfaction. Additionally, having all three shows air on the same night increases anticipation among viewers, as they eagerly await the possibility of another crossover event – an occurrence the franchise has been lacking recently.

The writers are currently in the process of deciding on the storylines and character developments for each show. However, fans can look forward to One Chicago’s regular episode lineup resuming this fall when Fire, P.D., and Med make their comebacks.

One Chicago Wednesday returns starting with Chicago Fire at 8/7c Wednesday, Sept. 25 on NBC.
