As a dedicated Euphoria fan with years of investing my emotions into this gritty and raw high school drama series, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and frustration as we await the long-awaited return of our favorite teenagers for season 3. While HBO confirmed the continuation of Rue and friends back in February 2022, the production process has been anything but straightforward.
As a longtime fan of gritty and emotional television shows, I can honestly say that nothing has gotten me as hyped up as the news that Euphoria would be coming back for a third season. I mean, Woodstock may have had its moments back in the day, but the intensity and realness of this modern-day teen drama leave it in the dust. When HBO made the announcement before the second season had even wrapped up, I was floored. It’s been a while now, and I can’t help but wonder, when is this elaborate high school saga with more plot twists than Desperate Housewives going to continue? My anticipation for more Rue, Jules, Kat, Fezco, and the rest of the Euphoria crew is through the roof. Bring it on!
Euphoria Season 3: Production Is Supposed To Start Soon
Since February 2022, there have been no new updates on the continuation of Rue & Friends, as the cast has been occupied with other commitments and Euphoria appeared to take a hiatus. This led some fans to speculate that the show might not return. Fortunately, those rumors proved unfounded.

Based on Collider’s report, filming was initially planned to begin in February 2023; however, this timeline has since changed. In the interim, the original screenplay has been discarded, and as of July 2024, a new script is still being penned.
Based on my experience working in the film industry, I can tell you that production schedules rarely go as planned. I’ve seen projects pushed back for various reasons, from budget issues to location availability. In this case, Deadline reports that shooting for the project is now scheduled to begin in January 2025, which is nearly two years later than originally intended. This delay can have a significant impact on the cast and crew, as well as on the overall production budget. It’s important to remain flexible and adaptable when working in this industry, as unexpected delays are a common occurrence.
Donni Davy, in charge of the makeup team, shared in an interview that it takes about a month to complete filming for each episode. Considering the post-production process, we can expect the show’s premiere around 2026.
Who Will Be Returning For The Euphoria Season 3 Cast?
As a longtime fan of Euphoria, I must admit that the ongoing drama behind the scenes is as captivating as the show itself. Having followed Kat, played by Barbie Ferreira, since the first season, it’s disappointing to learn about the creative differences between the actress and the creator Sam Levinson during filming for season 2.
For the returning cast, we are expecting:
Zendaya | Rue |
Hunter Schafer | Jules |
Jacob Elordi | Nate |
Alexa Demie | Maddy |
Algee Smith | Crhis |
Sydney Sweeney | Cassie |
Maude Apatow | Lexi |
Storm Reid | Gia |
Nika King | Leslie |
Austin Abrams | Ethan |
Colman Domingo | Ali |
Dominic Fike | Elliot |
Eric Danes | Cal |
Despite earlier rumors suggesting Zendaya wouldn’t appear in season 3, those speculations have been debunked. According to an interview with TVLine, Cassey Bloys confirmed that “Zendaya is indeed part of the upcoming season – it’s hard to imagine continuing the show without her.”
I was looking forward to seeing more of Fezco “Fez” O’Neill in the new season, but sadly, we won’t get that chance. His actor, Angus Cloud, passed away before filming began at just 25 years old. It’s a tragic loss for the show and for fans like me who enjoyed his performance as Fez. Although there was a cliffhanger regarding Fez’s fate in season 2, it’s impossible to bring Angus back, which may also be a reason why the script had to be revised.
How Will The Story Continue?
As for how Euphoria might continue, there are a bunch of things this season can tackle.
Initially, it’s essential that we proceed with Nate’s narrative as he faces the consequences of putting his father behind bars. Additionally, Cassie and Maddy, who previously had a major disagreement, could potentially mend their friendship (it’s quite uncertain, I acknowledge).
In the second season, Cassie emerged as one of the least endearing characters on the show, leaving much room for growth and improvement in her portrayal in future seasons.
Jules has a strong desire to reconcile with Rue. However, based on the ending of season 2, it seems that Rue isn’t yet willing to forgive Jules.
An intriguing theory suggested by observant viewers is that a hidden storyline might involve Nate’s unknown third brother, who showed up in family portraits from the past two seasons. Such a twist would fit right in with this series’ penchant for the unexpected and bizarre.
As a former high school student who went through my fair share of drama and chaos, I can understand why some people might be excited about more stories set in that context. But if I were to listen to Zendaya, it seems like Euphoria might be taking a different route. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she expressed her enthusiasm for exploring the characters beyond high school and seeing how their sobriety journeys unfold. Having gone through my own personal struggles post-high school, I can relate to the idea of wanting to move past the teenage years and face new challenges. It’s a testament to Zendaya’s acting skills that she can bring such depth and nuance to her character Rue, making me eager to see where her story goes next.
Based on my experiences working in the world of entertainment, I have seen many high school dramas that follow a predictable pattern. However, this new development could potentially take the show in an entirely unexpected direction. At this point, it’s all speculation, and we need more details to make any definitive statements. I’ll keep you informed as soon as I have more information!
