Zorro: Reimagined, Female-Led Series From Robert Rodriguez Finds New Home at CBS

As a long-time fan of Robert Rodriguez‘s gritty, action-packed films, I am thrilled to hear that his reimagined Zorro series is finally moving forward at CBS! With Rodriguez’s knack for creating memorable characters and high-octane sequences, I have no doubt that this gender-swapped take on the classic hero will be a fresh and exciting addition to the small screen.

Robert Rodriguez’s reimagined Zorro series is moving forward at CBS.

For quite some time now, Rodriguez has been working tirelessly to launch a fresh Zorro series, with the endeavor originally intended for NBC back in 2020, followed by The CW in 2022.

By the set deadline, CBS has commenced work on the project that involves a modern retelling of a classic character, originally conceived by John McCulley in 1919, with a gender-swapped perspective.

In this modern adaptation, a young Latina woman uncovers the truth that her late father was the renowned hero Zorro. Adopting his masked identity, she protects the vulnerable residents of her Austin, Texas community from the rich oppressors trying to take advantage of them.

What else do we know about the Robert Rodriguez Zorro series?

Together with Rodriguez, the project originates from writer-director Rebecca Rodriguez (Robert’s sister), Ben Silverman, and Howard T. Owens. John Hlavin, taking over from Sean Tetra as a fresh co-writer, is currently developing a new script for the Zorro series on CBS alongside Rebecca Rodriguez.

Robert Rodriguez is teaming up with Silverman, Owens, Rodney Ferrell, Geoff Clark, Eric Bromberg, Jay Weisleder, and John Gertz as executive producers.

It’s worth mentioning that another Zorro project is being developed, with the announcement back in 2021 revealing that Wilmer Valderrama has been working on a TV series for Disney+. In 2023, Bryan Cogman joined the team behind this exciting new venture.

According to an article on Deadline, it’s uncertain if Valderrama and Rodriguez could together build a vast Zorro universe from different studios, yet anything is possible.

Robert Rodriguez is well-recognized for his work as a director on films such as El Mariachi (1992), Desperado (1995), From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), Spy Kids (2010), Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003), Sin City (2005), The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl (2005), Machete (2010), Alita: Battle Angel (2019), and many others.

As a fervent admirer, I’m eagerly waiting for updates on the casting details for Rodriguez’s upcoming Zorro series. However, as of now, no specific dates have been announced for its premiere.
