After clinching the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2025 Oscars, Zoe Saldaña shared insights on the debates and criticisms related to Emilia Pérez.
Out of a grand total of 13 Oscar nominations, it was only on the recent Sunday evening that Emilia Pérez managed to secure two Academy Awards: the category for Best Supporting Actress (Saldaña) and the Best Original Song (“El Mal” by Clément Ducol, Camille, and Jacques Audiard).
The movie titled “Emilia Pérez” has sparked quite a debate. Recently, actress Karla Sofía Gascón’s tweets seem to have disqualified it from contention for Best Picture. Additionally, there’s been a lot of discussion surrounding the film’s portrayal of transgender characters and Mexican culture. Notably, the director, Audiard, is a French filmmaker who admittedly didn’t delve deeply into Mexican culture prior to producing the movie.
What did Zoe Saldaña say about Emilia Perez after winning the Oscar?
According to Entertainment Weekly, a journalist from a Mexican media outlet called Emilia Pérez “quite offensive” to Saldaña shortly following her win at the Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress.
Apologetically, let me express my deepest regrets for any offense taken by you and fellow Mexican fans. It was absolutely unintentional. Our perspective in crafting this film stemmed from a place of affection. However, I respectfully disagree with your viewpoint. For me, the core essence of this movie doesn’t lie in Mexico.
Instead of crafting a movie about a specific nation, we were focusing on the lives and struggles of four diverse women. They might have originated from Russia, the Dominican Republic, Detroit, Israel, or Gaza, but their stories could be from anywhere. They are universal figures, striving daily to overcome adversity and systemic suppression. Therefore, I remain steadfast in my convictions about our film’s message.
Additionally, Saldaña expressed her openness to engage in heartfelt discussions with her fellow Mexicans regarding potential improvements for the character of Emilia.
