Zach Cregger Confirms Weapons-Prequel About Aunt Gladys

Zach Cregger’s film *Weapons* is truly exceptional. He previously impressed audiences with the critically lauded *Barbarian*, but *Weapons* brought him much wider recognition and solidified his talent as a horror director.

Despite costing under $40 million to make, the movie *Weapons* earned about $263 million globally, becoming a major success in 2025. Given how well it did, it’s not surprising that the director, Cregger, is hoping to create more films in the same world.

What Is Weapons About?

A town is gripped by fear when nearly an entire class of children vanishes overnight, all at the same moment. The children’s parents begin to suspect their teacher (Julia Garner) may be involved in their disappearances.

The story unfolds through the eyes of three characters as they try to piece together the mystery. We see things from the perspective of a teacher, the father of one of the missing children, and a police officer.

This film dives into complex ideas like trauma, power dynamics, and what it means to be American, all within a fast-paced and exciting story. At its heart, it’s about dealing with grief and how people can be manipulated and used as tools.

What’s Next?

I just read an interview with director Bryan Cregger in *Fangoria*, and he mentioned something really interesting! Apparently, Warner Bros. is thinking about making a prequel movie all about Aunt Gladys. I’m so excited to learn more about her backstory!

It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it. There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bullshit.

Please be aware this contains spoilers! While the entire cast delivered excellent performances, Amy Madigan was particularly captivating as Aunt Gladys. The movie reveals Gladys is a recently arrived witch who moves in with the last surviving child. Despite being the villain, she’s a wonderfully unsettling and quirky character, managing to be both creepy and charming whenever she’s on screen.

Some people might assume the upcoming prequel is simply an attempt to capitalize on the success of the original, but Cregger says he actually started planning it before the first movie, *Weapons*, was even released.

I was ready. I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.

Resident Evil Movie

Before diving into the spin-off, Cregger needs to complete his current movie project – a new Resident Evil film slated for release in 2026. This movie will be an original story, separate from the games, and won’t include any existing characters or plotlines from the Resident Evil universe. Cregger is aiming to create something entirely new within the franchise.

Are you looking forward to Cregger’s next project? He’s quickly becoming known as a rising star in the horror genre, and I expect he’ll continue to impress.
