This separation creates two distinct personas: an Innie, active during work hours, and an Outie, which emerges when they’re at home or away from the office.
How ‘Your Outie Likes X’ memes went viral
The “Your Outie Likes X” meme gained widespread popularity on May 5th, 2022, about a month following the season finale that aired in April. Interestingly, this meme’s roots can be traced back to the second episode of Season 1, titled “Half-Loop.
In this episode, Irving, playing the role of an Innie, experiences a wellness check with counselor Ms. Casey. During this session, she shares details about his Outie personality, causing Irving to express surprise and astonishment. Yet, under strict rules, Irving cannot respond to these facts or show any preference, for fear of losing work points.
Last May, I hopped on to the old Twitter platform and decided to share a post featuring Ms. Casey’s photo. Pretending she was my Innie, I imagined her telling me facts about an imaginary version of myself, my Outie self. I shared some intriguing insights about what this hypothetical outer persona could potentially be like.
In no time, this meme skyrocketed in fame and numerous other social media users started sharing their variations of it. For example, one user declared that their Outie appreciated the video game Bloodborne.
In January 2025, the meme experienced a comeback as people eagerly awaited the release of Severance Season 2. On TikTok, a user shared an analogy likening their unique characteristics or habits to those of a Disney villain, referring to themselves as an “Outie.”
In the meantime, certain individuals have expressed that they might dislike or find it difficult to connect with their counterparts who possess an ‘Outie’ (outie belly button) if they were to meet them.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice the surge in popularity of the “Your Outie Likes X” meme. It’s evident that this meme has found a home among internet communities and is likely to persist on social media platforms at least until Severance Season 2 wraps up – if not long after!
