It’s been confirmed that the new Spider-Man series on Disney Plus has made its grand entrance, providing Marvel enthusiasts with a novel perspective of their beloved web-slinger. Yet, questions abound regarding the series’ position in the timeline and whether it aligns with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Indeed, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and here’s where it falls in the timeline:
The movie is a continuation of events following Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), making it chronologically placed after that film. However, it also references events from Captain America: Civil War (2016), which was a significant turning point for Peter Parker’s character in the MCU.
Does Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man take place in the MCU?
Instead of being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s chronology, your friendly neighborhood Spiderman is set in a parallel universe connected to the MCU, within the expansive multiverse.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the main action unfolds on Earth-616. As for the specific Earth or universe of our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, that information hasn’t been disclosed yet.
In an alternate reality, the story unfolds with Norman Osborn serving as Spider-Man’s mentor and advisor in his heroic endeavors, a role traditionally held by Tony Stark (Iron Man) in the primary Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Furthermore, unlike in the MCU, Peter Parker’s class at school doesn’t appear to include Ned Leeds or MJ. Instead, characters such as Nico Minoru from the Runaways comics, Harry Osborn (Norman’s son) and a younger version of Lonnie Lincoln, who is often portrayed as the villain Tombstone in various Marvel media, are among his classmates in this particular narrative.
In reality, a backstage video for the show discloses that the MCU’s Civil War or an alternative version of it transpired within this universe. Additionally, key MCU characters such as Doctor Strange and Daredevil have been confirmed to make appearances in the series. Interestingly, the voice of Daredevil will be provided by Charlie Cox, who portrays the character in the MCU as well.
Additionally, in this different world, Spider-Man seems to function as an online content creator or streamer, sharing videos over the internet. He often goes live after apprehending criminals during the series.
