In simpler terms, Brad Winderbaum’s recent statements about “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” reveal an important adjustment in the show’s storyline. Instead of the animated series sticking to Peter Parker’s early years within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it now features a crucial change in the multiverse, with Norman Osborn replacing Tony Stark as Peter’s mentor. This shift deviates significantly from the usual MCU storyline as we know it.
Here’s why Tony Stark is not in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
According to Brad Winderbaum, the reason Tony Stark is no longer appearing alongside Spider-Man in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man comics stems from a significant change in the storyline.
He shared with The Official Marvel Podcast that the series kicks off at a recognizable point in the MCU. Essentially, Peter retrieves a damaged Blu-ray player from the trash and enters his apartment for the iconic scene where Tony Stark is there, ready to offer him an internship at Stark Industries and invite him to Berlin.
In a twist due to events in the multiverse and unexpected incidents, it’s not Tony Stark who is there for him. Instead, it’s Norman Osborn that he encounters.
This series delves into a distinct take on Peter Parker’s narrative, featuring unique friendships and factors shaping his life. According to executive producer Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, the story picks up post-Civil War within the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s timeline, but swiftly veers off in a different direction.
She explained that the story begins in the MCU after the events of Civil War, with the Sokovia Accords now in effect. The setting is current day, and Peter arrives at Midtown for his first day. However, an unexpected incident alters our course, leading us to a universe where he never crossed paths with Ned or MJ.
In this unique narrative twist, the show brings Norman Osborn, portrayed by Colman Domingo, into a mentoring role for Peter. This adjustment, as explained by Vasquez-Eberhardt, paves the way for the introduction of fresh supporting characters like Nico Minoru. Vasquez-Eberhardt noted that these new additions complement each other exceptionally well.
The series introduces traditional Spider-Man adversaries that wouldn’t have fit into the current MCU sequence of events. For those who are fond of The Chameleon, you can expect to see multiple versions of him. Additionally, keep an eye out for Scorpion, as well as Speed Demon or Butane, as mentioned by head writer Jeff Trammell in a previous statement (via ComicBook.com).
In a fresh, friendly take, the much-loved character Spider-Man from Next Door stars in a 10-episode series. The talented Hudson Thames steps into the role of Peter Parker, and the grand debut will occur on Disney+ on January 29, 2025.
