If you’ve ventured through Elden Ring’s Nightreign, you might have found yourself in a familiar scenario. You and your companions are low on health, teetering precariously near defeat, with a Nightlord charging towards you. In an attempt to revive your friends and turn the tide of battle, you swing into action, only to find yourself uttering under your breath: “Why is this so challenging?” Unfortunately, this self-reflection results in your character being squashed like a pancake because you forgot to adjust the camera angle.
I encounter this situation quite frequently now, to the point where I no longer make an effort to change it. Instead, I find myself adopting a defensive playstyle and holding onto my special ability to resurrect my teammates – a strategy that seems to align with the game’s intended mechanics. However, what may puzzle you is why this process takes so much time. It appears that FromSoftware’s user interface is misleading in this regard.
The dependable researcher Zullie the Witch, known for her commendable work and videos linked above, has delved into the intricacies of the game’s revival system. Each weapon in the game secretly possesses a ‘revive damage’ stat – to illustrate, a dagger might inflict 10 points of revive damage, whereas a colossal weapon could cause 25.
In the initial life bar, a character needs to receive 40 points of revival damage to be resurrected. It may seem logical to assume that at three-quarters health (three bars), one would need to sustain 120 damage. However, this is not the case. The game developer has chosen to express these rules in plain language, rather than using the enigmatic terminology often found in FromSoftware games.
At two health bars, each bar has 45 HP for a total of 90 damage needed. With three health bars, the HP per bar increases to 80, necessitating a total of 240 revival damage. This implies that it’s six times harder to revive someone at three health bars compared to one. However, FromSoftware seems to present this increase as a linear progression through its UI element, implying that a teammate who has been knocked down three times is only three times more challenging to revive. This could be misleading because the actual difficulty might not scale linearly.
That’s a great question. Anyway, moving on.
Zullie discovered that an ally who has been knocked down three times recovers their health faster as well. Wait for about 3.5 seconds with a pal having only one bar of health, and the bar will start to replenish at a rate of two bars per second. Once they reach two bars, the rate increases significantly to nine bars per second. Reach three bars, and unfortunately, that character’s health regenerates incredibly quickly at 40 points per second.
Regarding weapons, they function according to standard reasoning. Zullie praises the Revenant’s claws as an exceptional tool for reviving, surprisingly dealing the same amount of revive damage as a greatsword despite possessing multiple attacks. However, spells are more intricate—they all share the same base damage, but they differ due to various modifiers.
The Cannon of Haima is equipped with a multiplier of 469%, which significantly increases the normal damage of the attack from 14 to an impressive 65 x 2 (one for the initial hit, another for the explosion). This powerful weapon has the ability to revive anyone at two health bars and can deal enough damage to defeat someone with three bars in just two hits.
I appreciate FromSoftware, yet, this entire experience infuriates me. I’ve been having a great time with Nightreign, but the elusive and playful mechanical design that encourages exploration and experimentation in other Souls games feels more like whimsy than anything else in Nightreign. It’s especially frustrating when every session is tense. Instead of battling the storm or the monsters of Limveld, you’re contending with deceptive UI elements as well.
