In the last episode titled “Thanksgiving (Canada),” we left off with two unaware individuals stumbling upon the Yellowjackets during a ritual feast on Coach Ben Scott’s body. It is later revealed in Episode 7 that these strangers were not ordinary hikers, but researchers named Edwin and Hannah. McHale enters the scene as Kodi, their wilderness guide. The pair are biologists studying the Arctic Banshee Frog, which turns out to be the source of the eerie noises heard by the Yellowjackets.
In contrast, while the researcher duo is more outgoing, Kodi maintains an enigmatic persona. He’s a man of few words, and his demeanor carries an intimidating vibe that’s further emphasized by the scars on his body. It’s worth mentioning that this character is quite different from McHale’s typical humorous acting roles. Yet, Kodi has demonstrated his ability to handle serious roles, as evidenced by his stint in The Bear where he played Carmy’s abusive executive chef, David.
Following the discovery of the Yellowjackets in Episode 6, Kodi, Edwin, and Hannah encounter them. This meeting quickly turns into a terrifying situation, with Edwin being killed by Lottie. Fleeing the scene, Hannah and Kodi become separated, leading to Kodi’s capture by Travis and Akhila. The episode concludes as Travis makes an unexpected move, choosing to enlist Kodi’s aid. This decision signals a shift in power that might set the stage for an intriguing new chapter.
