Yellowjackets: Showtime Being Sued for Copyright Infringement of 2015 Thriller Movie

As a dedicated fan of survival-themed shows and movies, I find myself intrigued by this copyright infringement lawsuit against Showtime Networks and Lionsgate’s Entertainment One regarding “Yellowjackets.” Being a connoisseur of such stories, it’s fascinating to see the similarities between “Yellowjackets” and the 2015 movie “Eden.

A copyright infringement lawsuit has been filed against Showtime Networks and Lionsgate’s Entertainment One regarding the popular Yellowjackets series.

yellowjackets debuted on Showtime back in November 2021. This gripping series by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson follows a high school girls’ soccer team who find themselves in a survival situation after a plane crash, deep within the wilderness. The second season was released in March 2023, with plans already underway for a third season.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the owners of the survival thriller movie Eden (released in 2015) filed a copyright infringement lawsuit on November 14, 2024, at a federal court in New York against Showtime Networks and Lionsgate’s Entertainment One, alleging that they had unlawfully used their intellectual property.

What else do we know about the Yellowjackets lawsuit?

The lawsuit alleges that Yellowjackets has taken significant aspects from the TV series Eden (not to be mistaken for the upcoming Ron Howard film), both being centered around a soccer team experiencing a plane crash, and their subsequent challenges in surviving until rescue arrives. Eden is directed by Shyam Madiraju.

Just like the Showtime show, Eden also portrays a compelling storyline with a charismatic, potentially violent leader who incites chaos, along with a supporting cast including a coach, trainer, head coach’s offspring, and a character of a different gender compared to the team, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The statement is saying that both works depict a situation where those who have survived, such as players, coaches, and others, are forced to battle against extreme weather conditions, starvation due to diminishing supplies, and the psychological strain of solitude, which manifests as inner turmoil. As they strive to stay alive, conflicts escalate, bonds are forged, hidden truths are revealed, and ethical norms are tested, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish between right and wrong.

Eden Film Production is aiming for undetermined compensation and a court order to prevent the creators of the show, Yellowjackets, from any future use of the series.
