As a seasoned connoisseur of cinema and a passionate follower of the vibrant South Indian film industry, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing the incredible talent that graced our screens this year. From the mythological grandeur of HanuMan to the emotionally turbulent Aadujeevitham, each director presented unique narratives that captivated audiences and left a lasting impression.

As the end of 2024 draws near, we can’t help but feel excited for a brand new year brimming with possibilities. Reflecting on the amazing movies that illuminated our screens this year, we were spellbound by the skillful directors who displayed their exceptional narrative abilities and artistic finesse.

2023 began in the South Indian film industry with the debut release of HanuMan, starring Teja Sajja as the lead character. This action-packed movie, based on Indian mythology, was skillfully created by director Prasanth Varma and boasted stunning visuals, setting the stage for an ambitious cinematic world.

Throughout the year, I found myself immersed in the distinctive world created by Director Chidambaram from Malayalam cinema through the film Manjummel Boys. Likewise, I was captivated by the Gen-Z-inspired romantic comedy Premalu, skillfully directed by Girish AD, leaving me with a heart full of love and optimism.

In the realm of survival dramas this year, it’s impossible not to bring up Aadujeevitham, a deeply moving and impactful film. Starring Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead role, the movie touched hearts and brought tears to many eyes. Director Blessy masterfully guided this production, with Prithviraj delivering one of his most powerful performances yet.

Later on, Fahadh Faasil appeared in the adored movie “Aavesham,” which was helmed by Jithu Madhavan. This action-comedy keeps us laughing each time we watch it, as it presents an exhilarating and humorous side of Fahadh.

Throughout the course of the year, Indian cinema experienced an exceptional milestone as Kalki 2898 AD, a groundbreaking and remarkable production, emerged. Directed by Nag Ashwin, this science fiction film, richly influenced by mythology, redefined the boundaries in storytelling and execution. Simultaneously, Tamil cinema presented one of the year’s top films with Maharaja. Starring Vijay Sethupathi, this movie, skillfully directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, set new standards for thriller movies, delivering a flawless performance.

Furthermore, moviegoers in Tamil region got to witness the touching camaraderie in Meiyazhagan, featuring actors Karthi and Aravind Swamy. This film was helmed by director C Prem Kumar and it not only tugged at heartstrings but also left a deep imprint on viewers.

During the upcoming holiday period, movies like “Lucky Baskhar,” directed by Venky Atluri, and “Amaran,” led by Rajkumar Periasamy, became audience favorites for Diwali. While these films belonged to different genres, they both impressed viewers with their compelling narratives. Additionally, the Kannada film industry left its imprint this year with “Bagheera,” directed by Dr. Suri.

Towards the end of 2024, three South Indian directors – Sukumar, Vetrimaaran, and Upendra – unveiled some of the year’s most eagerly awaited films. Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2 has been a blockbuster hit at the box office, while Viduthalai Part 2 and UI are holding their own as significant contenders for cinematic greatness.
